Wood steering wheel in a FSJ

Anyone put in an aftermarket wood rim steering wheel in thier Jeep and re-used the stock plastic backing ring and horn button?

Not yet, but I'm looking into it. What size do you think would be good?

I'd like to keep the stock size or just a hair larger.

I like the larger wheels in my 71 and 63 a bit better. maybe something inbetween.

I had a wood Grant GT steering wheel in my CJ-5, mounted to the Saginaw column. It looked great. Here's a pic.

Thinking about it for my 63, as the wheel is totally toast.

Well ... at least you'd have something to munch on, while driving.

LOL -- mine came with a wood steering wheel. If you want to count it as a steering wheel - it was a 2x4 bolted onto the column lol

I used a Grant wood wheel that was left over from my Catalina project and simply took the AMC Jeep logo and put it on the horn button. After a few sessions with some teak oil, the wheel matched the interior plood grain almost perfectly.

And I see the same instrument panel I just snagged for Gonzo - is that stock or a swap?

Stock. All I did was replace the lenses, do some clean-up work and re-paint the needles.

                        Framus, that looks great!

That is the exact wheel I was looking at on ebay.

I'd like to be able to re-use the stock plastic spacer and the horn button though.

I know I would have to drill three holes for the spacer, but the horn button should pop on, after the metal cup is mounted.

I need to get my hands on a nice wheel and give it a go.

Hey KaiserMan, I was searching the forum to see if I could put an original AMC Jeep horn button on a grant wheel for my 78 J10. How did your plan work out? ... I can see it’s been a few years!

You ever wonder what medieval cook looked at the guts of a pig and thought, "I bet if you washed out that poop tube, you could stuff it with meat and eat it."
