To X Mat or Not to X Mat?

Getting ready to tear out the interior. I have been looking at the idea of using X Mat or something like it. Like the idea of quieter and possibly cooler. Has anyone done this?

I did a bit of research and settled on the Kilmat product.

Put it on the cargo area roof, both rear quarters, and still have some left over for door panels using just the 36 sqft I bought. I actually bought 2 boxes, but figured out I'd never use the 2nd box, even with how liberal I was with rolling that stuff on everywhere.

I can't compare before and after since I never got a chance to drive the waggy before I bought it, but just based on hitting the panels it quiets things down quite a bit.

Look into Lizard Skin at Jegs there are 2 types, one covers heat and one sound. A really good product and it sprays so you can cover anything.

I used the peel and stick stuff on the roof, floor and in the sides where I could reach and stick it up, and I haven't been impressed. I have seen the tests on the Lizard Skin and that's what I'm using on the truck I'm doing now.

I found the mats helped dampen that reverberating tin can effect after stripping out the interior and applying a similar 80 mil peel and stick brand to the roof and side panels. I could tell the difference when tapping on an exposed panel before and after applying even 50% coverage of the mat to the panel. The other brand mats or spray-in products would prob also do a fine job. The rig is still super loud from an aggressive exhaust system and no carpet but at least it doesn't feel like piloting a rattle can anymore.

The thing is, you don't need full coverage of of the butyl to take the bong out of the panels. Twenty-five percent is plenty. Then spend the money and weight on an isolating layer of foam and full coverage with MLV.

                I agree sjtd

everything I read says approx 25% to dampen metal noise

                I used noico
then covered that with dynaliners 1/4" foam on floors

                it does not absorb water
it too controls heat and noise I think

I used noico on floors, interior cavities of body panels, roof.

I have quiet exhaust, so with bilstein shocks, new tires, etc..... a smooth road is heaven to a car guy in one of these wagoneers.

and much cooler than anything you can buy off of a new car lot.

On my last build I used Hushmat.. over all the floor and some in each door and quarter panels. Also did most of the roof.

I did it for some damping, but also wanted the heat protection.

Frankly, When it was all done.,.. the Jeep was actually quiet.
Afterwards, the wind noise around the front doors was the obnoxious part when the rest of the Jeep was so quiet.
                    Oh well, always something!

So, I am a believer in this stuff...
