a cracked liner will usually have some coolant staining around it.

Small update, the machine shop and I have been playing phone tag for a couple weeks but we finally connected and he should have my quote for parts today or tomorrow.

Lastly, the best quote I've heard in some time came from the machinist today.

He said " the new parts manager is more useless then pockets on underpants!"

That got me laughing at least, but ready for this engine to be done so I can get going on it!

I have never had a over heating issue with boring a 401 +0.040" or even +0.060" over for that matter. At +.060" they should be sonic checked to make sure there is still around .100" wall thickness. I have a 401 block that I have sonic checked and it will be going to 4.250" bore.

Most of the overheating issues is from not cleaning the water passages in the block good enough. The water jackets around the back two cylinders are the worse. Full of sand casting and radiator stop leak that you can't get out by hot tanking only. It has to be dug out with a screwdriver. Another reason that could cause overheating is due to piston and ring clearances to the cylinder. The bigger the bore, the larger clearance required.

I am a believer in the hype of the 401 but that is not to say that a 360 can't be bored and stroked to be a formidable foe.

Don't worry y'all, I'm still alive!
I hate giving excuses, but I'm also a hypocrite. So here are mine, with the engine at the shop during COVID and then the fires in Oregon the Wagon and house projects kinda took a back burner. Work has also been crazy busy, long story short - my work does purely prototype development of a product and we have since changed to FULL PRODUCTION in a matter of months, I am currently on a semi-permanent schedule of 10 hour shifts 5 days a week, and the last 2 weekends we have worked Saturdays as well!
Rant over.

Update time:
Larger house projects that hindered the continuation of the Wedding Wagon are just about wrapped up. Just need to buy/build a small shed, if any of you have a recommendation? I am all ears, this is just to house some yard equipment so I have room for Jeep disassembly.

I stopped by the machine shop for the engine yesterday and took care of all the miscommunication going on with the phone tag game we had going.
With that cleared up, there is potential that the block will be done today and I can pick it up this week!

Then it will be engine assembly (WITH PICTURES). At that point I will likely remove the 360 currently holding down the front of the rig because I need some brackets off of it.

Anyway hope to continue to update weekly from this point on! Cheers!

YAY!!!! (the engine part, not the fire or work part)

Excited to see your engine come together! Take your time. Make sure the clearances are correct to AMC. My machinist set mine up for a small block chevy (which is too loose for an AMC).

Thanks for the heads up, I will be putting the engine back together myself. So hopefully I can keep an eye on those clearances.

As you may have guessed I still have not received my engine block back. Small progress, I went there yesterday and they were just waiting on the pistons to do the final hone.

Ill go ahead and say it, hoping to pick up my block and parts this week!

Your post on 6/26 says you dropped it off then. Lets say you get it on 11/3 (hopefully you can pick it up before the riots start....errrr I mean the election is done), that's about what I waited for mine the first time, too. Considering you were having yours done during COVID, that's not bad. All the shops I called last month said they were slammed. All of them. So considering that, you're right on schedule!

Anyway, it's gonna be great to get it home! CLEAN everything 3 times, then once more before you put it together. Even if the shop "cleaned" it, clean it again.

Well heres finally an update.
Got a call from the machine shop yesterday, the Block is done!

BUT, my connecting rods are so far out of true that they are not willing to machine them.

I am not on the hunt for new 401 connecting rods

If anyone has any or knows where to buy them I would greatly appreciate it.
I will be digging into the google tomorrow.

Thanks to anyone who is patiently reading my thread, unfortunately I can't work on anything else until I put the engine together because I have limited garage space.

Because I'm a firm believer in pictures with posts here is a minty one

I just bought this about a month ago, sold my V12 Mercedes and got this greasy pile of goodness and have not been disappointed yet!

Nice! I love the Ramchargers. 1984? Kinda hard to tell the year. Sorry to hear about the engine problems.

Darn close shes a 1985, but I think that grill option ran a couple years. I have always like the two door SUVs like these, Ramcharger, K5 Blazer, and some of the Broncos. So I finally got my hands on one.
Only issue I've had and seems like everyone has is the 80s Dodge wiring is a mess.

No worries on the engine, its better we find it all now. Rather then have it blow itself apart running it how it was.
My machinist said whoever did the previous work was just very heavy handed with all the work and took off way more then needed.

I had an '84 back in the day. That 318 had a whopping 120hp I believe. The wiring is a nightmare. Is the computer attached to the air cleaner? Lol.

You should look up: amcperformance.com

This is what I found on his website. I think he is in Vancouver, Washington or somewhere close in SW Washington.
AMC AMX Javelin & others 401 core connecting rods. The set.

$155.00

A fair trade! Very nice! I didn't know they painted Cherokees that color combination!

I put up a wanted ad on theamcforum for another set of parts and it was answered almost immediately. If you have an account over there, I bet if you ask, someone will have a set available. If you do not have an account, let me know and I can ask for you...

Thanks for the replies everybody! Didnt get my notifications or I would have replied sooner.

Only problems I have had from the Ramcharger are wiring based, but Ive nearly fixed all that. Thanks again!

78 Widetrack I will check out the website you mentioned, Thanks!
