finally making time

I'm finally getting time to try and move forward a bit on my step side project
i'm a little bit stuck on one part of it
LOTS stuck on many items

but the current issue is its a 1982 step side
that i've converted to a 1966 front end
and after spending a few years trying to find the 3 piece bumper
i found one and have slowly been preparing it to go on
last night i went to mock it up and hit a snag

so i went and looked at my daughter "new to her 77 401 wagoneer" and see the difference

if you compare the front of the 2 frame rails
the 82 looks like they extended the frame rail for the one piece bumper

i'm thinking i'm not the first one that tried this
(I hope)
if anyone has done this, did they just "chop" the front and weld a front plate on to bolt the 3 piece to?
i can post pics if required

BTW old 82 bumper is for sale, i'll put it in for sale section
its in really good shape

thanks for any insight
i'd like to get these 2 FSJ's on the road this year
so i'm trying to work on them side by side

I don't know much

but I know you are correct on the frame mounts

in later years,...they were extended with three holes to accept one piece bumper

hopefully someone on here will chime in and have more details for you

but you are on the right track.

Send me a pic of the front bumper. I'm always looking for a nice one. I can look at my '67 and compare it to the '86 and see if I can tell the difference between the two.

Hi all, i had my "welding buddy" here giving me a sober second thought
it does look like we need to chops off the front of the frame rail
and i guess drill a hole in the crossmember to bolt to

i could MacGiver it, but it won't be pretty
so he's going to step in and do it
and hopefully not wreck my fresh paint job
sigh.....

i'll post a picture of the bumper

thanks for ringing in

Description
Bumper Extension Brackets / Frame Horns! These brackets are a weld-on style and allows you to convert early model frame to have the same brackets as the 1979-later models. This allows you to install our later model bumpers on an earlier model rig! 1/4" thick steel plate and steel gussets, and even includes instructions!

Will not fit Ross Bell Crank Steering Equipped FSJ's (1963-1964, approximately). See Ross Bell Crank Steering style crossmember / frame picture above which shows the style this kit will NOT fit.

The chassis changed in 78. When I swapped chassis's under mine (from a 79 Chassis to a 78 Chassis), I cut those frame horns off, the C-channel looking bumper mounts, and welded them to the 78 chassis. The 79 Chassis still had all the same mounting points and threaded holes as the 78 chassis.

I'm really interested in the bumper too!!! You willing to ship? PM me!!!

I have done exactly this on my old '79 Wagoneer. Just need to chop the frame extensions off and drill a couple holes in the cross member to fit the three piece bumper.
