Engine Runs but Won't Drive

The 88 Grand Wagoneer that I bought for parts runs, but it won't drive. When we were trying to get it onto the trailer to bring it home, I was flooring it and it was hardly crawling (I didn't do it for more than a second because I did not want to tear something up). We added tranny fluid and that didn't help.

Any ideas on what it could be?

It is stock 360/TF727/NP229.

Given that this isn't really vital since it is a parts vehicle, I still would like to know just for personal knowledge. And if it is a cheap/easy fix I might have a crack at it just for experience's sake.

Thanks.

Definetly sounds like a tranny problem. Did you try angaging the 4wd and putting it in 4wd low to see if that makes a difference?

You could try adjusting the bands and see if that helps.

with the fluids being at par you have an internal tranny issue

Thing is, the transfer case lever is completely loose. So I could not change it.

What could it potentially be within the tranny?

In the trans I'd suspect broken bands or governor since it is topped up and not bleeding trans fluid. Does the reverse work? If you could have gotten it into 4wd low and it operated correctly it would most likely show that the viscous coupler in the transfer case is the culprit. At least that would indicate whether your problem is with the trans or the transfer case. Someone please correct me if I'm totally off base here

I'll try reverse and 4lo tomorrow (if I can get it in 4lo that is). Let you know the results tomorrow.
