    Busted Hood Ornament

So I'm pulling out of my driveway the other day and BOINK?my hood ornament pops off. Eyelet wore through I'm guessing from vibration. I was going to pinch it closed and JB the gap as best I could, but then was wondering is there a good reason why I shouldn't just JB the whole thing to the mounting hardware? Anyone else ever needed to fix one of these? I know its a pretty minor thing with all the real FSJ problems that are out there, but when I saw how much these go for on ebay, I want to make sure that it doesn't go BOINK again, this time on the interstate.

I drilled and tapped the bottom of the square ornament part, then put a screw up thru the base where the spring assembly used to be. Its been fine for a couple of years. I even go through the carwash with it.

Thanks, gents. That's the answer. Any idea about what size screw you drilled for? My life is a series of drill and tap projects gone bad, so I'd like to get this one right.

Just for fun I swapped a Chrysler emblem I had on my buddy's GW (his ornament was long gone) Took him several days before he noticed and cussed me out till I pointed out he had a Mopar 6BT in it!~.

I did the same thing on my Eagle wagon for photos this past April Fool's day.

                x2, just did that myself.

                Maybe this would be better...

AFAIK the spring is in there for safety in a pedestrian collision. The rigid protruding hood ornament could cause a severe injury in a low speed collision with a pedestrian or cyclist.

I thought it was to prevent injury to the ornament in the case of a collision with a pedestrian....If I hit a pedestrian with my jeep, the ornament is gonna be the least of their worries! lol

But you may be right Tgreese, I just never thought about it.

Yeah many ways to peel this onion.

With the brush guard on the front of mine the pedestrian worries won't be the hood ornament. I rigidly mounted mine to protect it from pedestrians that like to make necklaces out of them.

I was a little fearful of drilling and tapping mine, so I got two rubber 'fender washers', with the hole just larger than the studs on the bottom and two new self cutting nuts. Put the washers on and then the nuts and they snugged up surprisingly tight.
