    AMC20 Axle bearings

    1980-86ish
How much end play in the axles when these are new?
There's no specs in the FSM or Haynes.

I've read posts where people have 1/8 to 1/4" which is obviously bad.
Mine are only .030" total (both sides added together) and I didn't notice any radial play, but.....
All my experience has been with adjustable tapered bearings and there's practicly no play at all.

Response from Rick, a tech a Timken.
The allowable axle movement axially is 0.021”. Any more than that is out of tolerance.
    Hope this helps,

Decided to measure the play in a new from the factory Timken Set 10.
Well, there was nothing to measure!

In the box is a pre-greased bearing set and a retaining ring.
Glad I looked before buying a couple of rings from the dealer.

Play on left .014, right .018"
Would love to hear other people's experinces and opinions here.

After I type this I'm going to remove them.
There may be a small leak on the right axle. (see photo)

In the differential there is no thrust block even though the shop manual shows one. ?????
I'm not seeing one listed in the parts book. ????
The differential itself looks nice and seems tight. Anything to check or look for?

Which shop manual? If the TSM for your year, I would look into it. If Haynes or Chiltons, or not the correct year, meh.

My '82 TSM shows a thrust block that the pinion mate shaft goes through. You'd have to remove the case (carrier) to install it, I'd think. Possible AMC eliminated it for later axles.

That's probably what happened. (Eliminated but the not updated in the mr253 shop manual)
There are no IS notes listed for rear axle '84-86.

Not showing in the reprint parts catalog or on-line.

Got to say I could feel the difference even driving at low speeds over pothole riden broken streets.

Something is still moving and clunking but its not the axles. Something like the torque arm on the trans, a body bolt, or the leaf spring clamps hitting the frame rail. Eventually I'll track it down.
