1977 J10 Paint Scheme

Hey Guys,
My 1977 J10 is primered up and ready to get into the paint booth. I have been doing some research on this site and on the google images and can't seem to find a consistent pattern for side stripe.

I'm planning on painting the truck two-tone. Blue up top and white on the bottom. I wanted to put in a double stripe in Burgundy on the side to give it that awesome 70s feel.

I'm inclined to follow the body lines, but the decals that were on there dipped just before the headlights, completely ignoring the "Upscoop" on the front fender panel.

I've also seen a version where the stripes have a slight rise in them above the fenders. It is absolute MADNESS!

Anyone know what was coming out of the factory in 77? I've seen so many custom jobs my head is spinning.

Any and all posts of inspiring paint jobs would be greatly appreciated.

Hope everyone has an excellent holiday!

Jonnya10

P.S. I will definitely post a pic once all is said and done. I figured you guys have seen enough "half-way sanded" trucks over the years.

IMO the best paint scheme for J trucks in the 70's was the Golden Eagle.

I have seen a bunch of folks paint the indent down the side where the Wagoneers had a thin stripe of woodgrain. I don't think Jeep ever did that from the factory on the J trucks but it does look good.

In 77 you got :
- the honcho
- a two tone paint with a stripe between
- the pioneer woodgrain
and in 77 1/2 IIRC the golden eagle

lot of stripes for the '79 and '80 honcho, if it's what you want . One of them cover what you call the "upscoop"

That was a 78/79 thing. Here is a 78.

Here is a 72 thing. They used the stainless strip as the breaking point for color.

In 74, there was a thin decal strip (3/4"?) option that was woodgrain where the stainless strip is but turns down along the front flare. I think that is an early Pioneer trim.

I know '78 used a decal stripe to seperate the two tone. Mine had an orange stripe seperating the dark brown from the tan. I will try to find a picture.

Heres my '77, this was how I got it. If it and the roof was added later, it was well done. It looks like it has always been there.

And now...

'77 Honcho

Firecracker Red, blue interior, and white Headliner. Finished off with the gold and black Honcho decals (Phoenix Graphics sells a decal kit).

Here's my 1980 J10. I bought it new, but I think the "Scorpion" stripes were a dealer added kit. I never saw another one like it.

*Rocking the '80s hair!

I'm going to do some form of those stripes on my '82 Cherokee, I believe. But it won't say "Scorpion".

75 Pioneer. As far as I know, this is the only year the Jtruck got full wood.

This is a little different using the "dart" area for lines.

78 J10 10-4 scheme

My favorite tutone for a Jtruck, 73 J4600:

I like the two tone.

DO NOT GO FOR THE WOOD LOOK. YUCK! I had to wash my eyes out from the pain.

If I had a step side there is no doubt in my mind I would go red with the honcho stripes. It just SCREAMS eighties.

This is my current Honcho paint. I plan white with blue flames later. I'll be making measurements of the color/design for one of the shops that makes decals for these rigs before I do.

I think I gotcha, the orange has faded to a very dull yellow and is about 1/4" thick:

Hey carnuck! I know your truck! I was first on the scene five years ago when it spat the passenger side rear axleshaft on the Mountain loop highway! I'm glad to see it's still alive!

I would love to see this pic, sounds exactly like the 78 J20 my Dad bought new.

The 2 tone of the 75-76/77 looks like the 78's except a bump up over the rear fender flairs.

And here's one from a few weeks ago during removal of rattle can primer:

Just FYI, Phoenix Graphix is currently in the process of making a Honcho stripe kit for the '81 - '83 Honcho trucks. They have been looking for someone with a sportside Honcho to get some info from. If you would be interested PM me and I can give you the contact info of the person to get in touch with.

I just did my 73 with the scheme from the 72-73 models, that orange and white one, is that the one that traveled around with the Jeep Experience exhibit show a couple years ago? I saw one there and fell in love with it.

Its not finished but you get the picture...
