    factory fog light wiring questions

    About the 80-85's.

I installed the facotry Marchel (sp) fog lights, brackets and switch on my 83.

I have plugged the switch into a plug under the dash (I figured it was the correct plug, and I was apparently right), plugged in a relay and now with the switch and low beams on the little light (on the switch) comes on, and goes off with high beams.

So all that seems to be right. But what goes in bewteen the lights and the switch to tuen them (lights) on?

Is there a wiring harness that plugs into something? If so, wher and what does it plug into? I can make my own harness, but have no idea where to start.

Pics of the stock set up would be great!

    Thanks.

I checked out Toms site, but I can't figure out where the harness connects into the stock wiring. I don't seem to have any extra plugs/wires etc. coming off the stock switch that could lead to the lights.

Pics would be great, thanks Lindel.

I don't know about the 83 but when I look at the 83 diagram on Tom's site, it leads me to think there is a relay inside the cab. On my 88s, the relay is on the drivers side fender well.

My (Our, really. Hers to drive, mine to fix... ) also has the relay on the side of the fender well with the harness plugging into that. Pics will be downloadable from Media fire, and I'll have links up momentarily.

The 80-85 are different then the later ones, My relay is under the dash, and plugs right into the harness that comes off the switch. The switch also plugs into the vehicle harness, I just can't figure out how the wires are run out to the lights. I have no clue where they plug into the switch, or what ever.

Thanks for the link, btw. I'll give it a good going through in a bit.

                  CJ Marchal's

81-86 CJ 's the green rocker switch & harness with relay plugs into pigtail on headlight switch.

Also on CJ... there is an orange wire near headlights that has black plug on it.

                  Not sure about FSJ.

I'm having a similar problem. But from what I was able to trace on my 86 is a relay under the dash and 1 on the fender. Had power to the switch but not at the lights. Now no power. The harness is a rats nest because of the alarm system which doesn't work right any way. I bought a complete light kit with a wiring diagram to operate them only w/hi beams. When I get a helper ( 1 of the kids) I'm going to mount everything in original locations. I hope you have better luck.

Lindel, those pics where great. My relay is under the dash, but I do have the power wire right near the overflow bottle (like Dennis said).

I scored a complete fog light wiring harness, but it was different then mine. It grabbed power right off the fuse block, and ran a replay on teh firewall. Stock, just different.

So I ran that, and ran the power wire to that relay. So I have two relays, and everything works the way it's supposed to.

                      Thanks.
