    727 removal newb. pointers anyone?

my transmission needs to come out of my 84 j10. I just picked up
a nice rebuilt unit from E34felix89 (thanks!) and now the "fun" begins.

this will be my first 727 removal. and I have noticed that with FSJs
there are no easy or small job. every little thing you do, you need to
take about 5 other things apart to get it done.

VWs are my forte. a few bolts, lift the car, slide out drivetrain.
    20 minutes. done.

can any of you more experienced people run through the procedure
for me? Im mechanically inclined, so no worries there... but would
like to here if there are any things I need to do that I don't yet realize.

do I need to take the tunnel cover off? or can it be done from below
only? I have a one piece rubber mat, so i'd have to gut the interior
    to get to the cover.

    thanks in advance.

First off I'd drain the fluids from both, makes them a little lighter and less mess. I have enough 3/8's extensions to go from the back bumper to the front bumper, so I usually get the top 2 from the eng. compartment and the rest from underneath. An extra set of hands never hurts either.

    Hope this helps....

Removing the transmission tunnel cover helps a lot. You can get an impact on most of the engine/trans bolts that way. The rest, as mentioned, are removed from the bottom.

Don't forget to be careful of the linkage and the vac lines that go to the t-case.

its pretty easy, i mean, i was able to do a 727 R&R
i gutted my interior and removed the cover, it made things easier (and you get see how your floorboards look).
pretty straight forward... take the driveshafts off, take the linkage off the t-case, decline press the t-case out, take tranny linkages/wires off, unbolt the tranny, and roll it out (even with a 3" lift and 31" tires i had to use a very short rolling device to get the tranny to clear my frame, the floor jack was too tall). and clean everything up real well!

But if you do pull the cover you can use a cherry picker to lower it to the ground.

Mark the converter and flex plate it only bolts up one way.

Be very carefull with the hard lines from the trans, they bend and break easy.

Just did this today actually. Makes it much easier if you have the tunnel cover off. Lots of extensions are necessary and some of the bolts were hella tight. I didnt take my exhaist off either as the manual says to do. And to lower it to the groung, wrap a ratchet strap around the trans and run a 2x4 over the top of the tunnel and lower it that way onto a piece of cardboard ans lide it out.
