m715 axles-------- why not?

I was just wondering why more people dont run the m-715 axles

are they weak or hard to work with?

Drum brakes, weird 6x7.5" or something like that bolt pattern, closed knuckle front. I beleive 16 spline shafts, and I'm pretty sure the stock shafts in it's front 60 are the same diameter as a Dana 44.

however,if you can pick up a set of m715 axles cheap enuff(id have to have em almost for free [img]smile.gif[/img] ) it possible to upgrade the front 60 for 35 spline inners,big u joints,and disc brakes. prolly also quite possibe to upgrade to 8 lugs,using the rear hub off of something else

Yea, But I bet that would end up costing just as nutch as buying later model axles.

The rears have 1.5" diameter 23 spline axleshafts that dwarf D60 shafts. I've seen very few broken rear shafts, and this is with very large tires and big HP.

23 spline D70 shaft on the left, 30 spline D60 on the right.

you could spend $1000 on a set of stock set of axles-late model 60/14 bolt.

if you spent that $1000 on a set of dirt cheap/free m715 axles,youd end up with a better axle,cause youd be putting in aftermarket high strength inner shafts 35 spline outers,and youd be replacing seals/bearings,etc, while youre in there,and theres maybe enuff of that $1000 left after buying the shafts to buy a locker [img]smile.gif[/img]

so if your happy with stock axles,then thats an ok way to go,if youre gonna build its gonna cost you more like $2000-$2500 to purchase and build with all the good stuff

i found such a set of M715 axles original rims tires and a spare tire never mounted for $300

Pretty good I plan to sling them under my 67 wag this next month. That leaves me with a lot of spare cash to build them. The brakes by the way are plenty to lock up all 4 on the donar M715. Should be more than enough for the wag. There are several posts on the M715 forums to switch to larger shafts, disc brakes etc.

Oh did I mention the axles and tires mave less than 20,000 miles on them. The gear oil was clear and the seals are all good.
