Shop rate is $50. I get around 35% commission. If a job is listed at 10 hours on the estimate, that is what I make no matter if it takes me 5 hours or 20 hours.

Okay, that's weird.

Around here mechanics and welders and most laborers are hourly, salesmen are commission and/or salary, management is salary.

Construction jobs are usually bid an estimated set dollar amount for the job when completed, but the laborers are sometimes hourly, sometimes based on material installed. I hated working that way, especially when the bid doesn't cover extenuating circumstances, like having to build or remove something extra in order to finish the job as originally bid - somebody was losing money there, often it was me...and I was doing the work.

They call it "flat rate hourly", but same as commission. Unless we find something not seen when we get into it the labor total is it. If we find something hidden, then we file a supplement with the ins. co. and get some more time/materials/parts to fix.
