True/False? Front main seal = crankshaft seal

Chasing oil leaks on my 84 GW. I get confused when I read the multitude of threads.

on the 84 360: Can you replace the front crankshaft seal (which = front main seal?) by pulling the harmonic balancer, pulling the old seal, seating a new seal, replacing the balancer.....

or, do you have to pull the timing cover & replace it from inside that?

Yes you can replace it from the outside. Some of the earlier timing covers had a lip that made replacement impossible form the outside but I believe this changed in 1978. You will need to be carefull installing your seal becasue you are basically driving it in backwards...not ahrd to do just takes patience and you may ruin a seal or two if your not carefull. REMEMBER THE SPRING FACES IN NOT OUT

Good luck!
