Swapping out the TH400 for a GMTH350 with Novak or A.A.

Has anyone used the Novak or Advance Adapters AMC v8 to GM hydramatic tranny adapter/flexplate kits?

I've decided that a TH350 -NP205 combo will suit my needs/budget at the moment

I have never done transmission work before other than dropping the pan and changing the fluid/filter. Based on what I've read/heard here is what I think I have to look forward to

    - using a different throttle cable/kickdown that is compatible with the TH350
    - hooking up a shifter combatible with the TH350 ( eyeing an Art Carr gate shifter)
    - possible modifying the crossmember to work with the 350-205 adapter

    Any pointers?

Just curious, but why not get a 400/205 adapter & install a GM 32spline output shaft in your 400?

Rob's suggestion would be much cheaper too...

Unless he's already got a good working TH350/NP205. While I do tend to agree that a TH350 is a waste of time/effort, if you've got it run it. If you do decide to change later, though, you've wasted whatever money you've put into the adapter for the TH350.

Pulling the TH400 and having the output shaft replaced usually isn't cheap...

The kickdown on a TH350 is cable actuated so you would have to go find a universal cable that you can cut down and make work.... Lokar makes these.

The shifter linkage from your TH400 should be the same. I went from the TH400 to a 700R4 and I am still using my stock shifter.

When I did my 700R4/NP208 swap, I took a Blazer crossmember and cut the center out and then cut the center out of my stock crossmember and welded them together. It works suprisingly well.

            Hope this helps.

I have tried to find a 32-spline input NP205, to no avail. I have a 27-spline input 205 which can be modified to work ,but its going to cost roughly $275 to set it up with a 32-spline input shaft. The adapter and tranny output would be another $200. So, $475 + the cost of a rull-rebuild of my TH400. Roughly $875 before crossmember and driveshaft work.

Keeping my 205 27-spline and picking up a good TH350 core for $50 ,having it rebuilt for $400 , buying a Advance Adapters adapter kit 2nd-hand for $150 shipped and ironing out the details would be roughly $200 cheaper.

But, now that I'm seeing myself type about a measly $200 savings (even though my budget is shrinking by the minute) and ,potentially, at the cost of some drivetrain strength..........I am reconsidering.

Though I have seen TH350's hold up to some sick abuse when the sprag/drum assembly is upgraded.

                more or less.

I've got to get my engine installed, new rotors and hubs on my front 60, a crossover drag link built, this tranny/tcase issue ironed out and some miscellaneous odds and ends like spring hangers, brakelines, hydroboost parts and seats .............

                with approx $2500 to spend

(spent to much $$ on replacement rubber seals at www.bjsoffroad.com with my trigger happy "buy now" finger. Rubber parts that don't help it run......and that won't be installed until it does run)

                  Every little bit helps

How complicated was it to set up the 700R4 correctly? I can get my hands on a 700R4 core that would bolt to my 205 with some "trimming" of the tranny output. 3.06 1st and overdrive would be nice, but I hear the 700R4 can go south if the throttle cable isn't setup properly

Contact Cajun-lad... He has a AMC V8 to Chevy tranny adapter..

I have been in the same position for a while now. I finally decided to bite the bullet, and spend the $$$$$....

I am not even going to waste my time on a used np205, unless one just falls in my lap for cheap... There is a guy locally that sells fully rebuilt, twin stick ready np205's with 32 spline inputs and output all the way around for $800.

That sounds like a lot, but once you add up the price of a 205 + the rebuild kit + the 32 pline front output + the shif rail mods, you end up pretty close if not over that price. If you have to convert to 32 spline input, then you will likely be WAY over...

Once its all said and done, I will probably have about 3 G's in my tranny/Klune-V/np205 combo..

Thats a lot, but I figure it I do it right the first time, I wont ever have to worry about it again....

Well, with my driving style, I may go through tranny rebuilds fairly often, but the rest should be good....

First... It looks like you are IN TROUBLE with that budget... That "little stuff" adds up REAL fast.

Second... Brent is a real good guy! I would bet that you could work out a refund for that rubber in trade for a nice new Novak Cheby tranny adapter.. Or, maybe some other stuff that you actually NEED..

Aye, it does. I didn't SEE the Dana60's I bought before I unloaded them from the trailer. Didn't really get ripped, but I could have gotten the price down $100 or so if I had been there. The front does have a hi-steer arm already on it and it looks like the gears/welded diff were done right, but I was told it just needed (1) brake rotor and it was good to go. It needs both rotors and both hubs (got a good deal on a new set of 30-spline Warn hubs) . One side of one rotor was GONE. Eating into the vent ribs. The other side had several deep grooves.

$2500 isn't THE END. Its just what I have on hand that I was hoping would get this rig in working order...... Looks like its going to be down a wee bit longer. Well, I'll get it running and driving...but the axle swap/suspension mods will be put off for another month or two.
