1968 Jeep J-3500 finds a new home.

Hi everyone my name's Tim and I'm a jeep owner. (feels like I should be sitting among a ring of chairs in a poorly lit gymnasium with dim lighting and a twelve step program sign on the door) Just over a week ago I brought home a fair condition 1968 J-3500. This is now the third Jeep I currently own. I'm still discovering just what I have and what will need to be done. It does run and drive, though everything needs a lot of TLC. This is just the discovery phase of what is probably going to be a long restoration/preservation process. I'll try to post some pictures soon.

Here's a few highlights of what I do know so far:

1968 J-series pickup, with the fleetside bed. I think the vin translates to a J3500? 3406WS101XXX - 5000 gvw (With the exception of the VIN plate in the door jam, there are no badges or tags on the entire truck that I've been able to find so far.)
Though born with a V8, it is running a swapped Buick 430 big block
TH400 transmission
Dana 20 Transfer case
Dana 44 front
Dana (Spicer) 53 rear axle (don't believe that can be original either)

The engine runs well, but desperately needs a tune-up. Drives fine with great power steering. Though I'm currently fighting a brake light issue that is preventing me from doing any good driving yet. The bad part is that there are more electrical issues than I can list here! The previous owners during it's life where in no way, shape or form electricians! The dash is a total mess and the steering column has a broken turn signal switch that appears to hold meny of my wiring problems.

Even with the problems, she's a keeper. As I knew going into it, you don't buy one of these for the build quality or reliability. You buy it for the love of ol' Jeeps and the enjoyment of just emptying every pocket!

Yeah the D53 only came stock in the X and Y (6000 and 7000GVWR) models. Tough axle till you need parts...cause there are NO parts avail for the 53.
Good luck with the butchered inline fuse wiring. Prolly best to buy a generic full rewire kit from EZWire or Painless.

Actually found a good selection of ring and pinions, drums, brakes, seals, shims, and bearings at Crown Automotive and BJ's. Unless they throw me a curve ball and it has a power lock installed, getting the "normal" wear items hopefully won't be too difficult.

2010 JK - all the normal bolt on stuff you can think of. 4" Currie lift, 37" tires, stubby bumpers, flat fenders and such...

That's good news for a lot of folks. Hope when you researched you asked specifically for D53 parts. If you asked about J-3500 axles you'll get D44 parts. Only the J-3600 and J-3700 got the rear D53. I know the 5 hole 12"x2" brake drums should sell like hotcakes.

Yeah, I was specifically looking for D53 stuff. Something along these lines will come in handy soon... https://www.crownautomotive.net/Axle.../J0912647.html

As for the 12" drums? Well that one is going to be an issue. We have 11" from several suppliers, but as you said the 12" is a totally different story.
