    tranny help

ok gsmikie i know youll look at this.
1.I just bought a tranny because mine is leaking bad. The PO said the tranny i just bought made a noise much like if you were to put it in park while moving. That clicking noise. What could be wrong with this tranny?

2 At first I just bought the new tranny for the case but it looks like it is much better shape than mine. The the PO of my old tranny said something about some welding done to the case and he thinks the pan won't seal properly. Should i keep the new tranny and use the old one for parts or try and put a new tranny pan on and see if it stops leaking?

thats a good question......... but like i always told my kids ....... funny how we can never find the time or money to do it right the first time ............. but we always can find the time to do it over again
I\'ve seen gsmikie\'s video for the TH400 and thought it was just awful.watching a guy tear down a greasy pile of metal in a junkyard. it dosent have to be surrounded by water to be an island

I could not agree more. Last one I had done as a "bench job" was $450. That included new torque converter, kevlar band, red plates, new planetary, and a good guarantee. Do it right the first time and forget about it.

If im not mistaken the ticking noise is coming from a mis adjusted parking pawl...check out at manual at autozone or somewhere for gm transmissions and it will tell you how to adjust it

im thinking center support or rear torrington bearing since it makes the noise while it is moving as for the parking pawl there is no adjustment to the rod only the external linkage the springs on the end of the park rod do break and allow the pawl engagement fitting to not have enough pressure to keep the truck in park and dont forget the spring on the park pawl but if it broke you would not have the noise while moving (gravity)

Sounds like the TH400 was from a QT-equipped rig and that's what they sound like if the QT is in nuetral and it is shifted to park. That was the problem with the TH400 in my 73. The DSPO didn't know what was wrong and I ended up getting the truck for $700. You should have seen the look on his face when I drove the truck by his house the next day after shifting the QT back into gear.

As for the welding on the case, this sounds like a double cardan joint letting go on the front shaft and the shaft smacking the case. Depending on how well the repair was done, it may not be a problem. I broke the front right corner of my TH400 and repaired it. Its been holding together just fine for the past 8 years or so.

I don't know if it made the noise while it was moving. The PO said it went out on his previous PO and he just stopped driving it right then. The PO said it drives fine in reverse just not forward.

How hard is it to shift the t-case back into gear?
