    Advice on redneck engineering

I want to clean up the top of the intake if possible and remove some things and plug them off with pipe plugs or something.

Let's just forget that I may be an idiot and lets assume these are good questions!

I had the picture professionally retouched to help with the questions, please save the ooh's and ah's for later...

A: Can I remove the EGR and plate it off without any side effects?

B: Can I remove the whole assembly here and just put in like a 2" nipple for the heater hose to attach to? nothing was attached here I think??

C: Remove this and plate it off? (I will be using a manual choke)

D: Remove and put a pipe plug in the whole, Don't think anything was plugged in there before...

E: Again...don't think anything was there so I want to remove and plu.

MY MEMORY SUCKS! So if something important should be plugged into something I thought was not plugged into please yell it out.

You can block off egr without any issue if youre not in a emissions state. The CTO closest to the egr controlls the egr so it can go too. The other 2 CTOs control the distributor choosing manifold vac below 155 degrees, ported at operation temp, and manifold again if temp reaches 225 degrees. The idea is to increase advace to keep the engine at proper temperature. Its an emissions thing but also doesn't hurt anything and helps driveability some.

For C, good luck finding the block off plate. I've looked and looked. Going to have one made somewhere.

Is C a vacuum source? Does it have to be capped? I thought it was a for pulling a vacuum through a heated source for the thermal choke?

Mine is open, ie the plate has the two holes in it with the tube connecting them.

Aftermarket intake and save the $$ the Chiro would cost?

I dont think it has to be capped except for looks, I think it is just for heat transfer to the choke....?

Those tubes (they coil down into the exhaust crossover in the intake) will eventually crack/rot off from the heating and cooling cycles and you will end up with a nice exhaust leak that you can't figure out. BTDT.

Yeah, pull the plate out, cut/drill the coils out, thread the holes, and put a bolt in the holes or weld them shut.

as alot of 70s-80s engines were made with all that stuff and it is not needed. the only thing you have to have on it is one vacuum line going to the dist. advance. thats the way they were built for years. but if it's there the automatic choke does need heat to pull off and power brakes need vacuum but that's about it.
