Most of us already know this, but before hitting the trail, you should inspect the following:
Hoses
Tires
Belts
Safety equipment (Fire extinguisher, seatbelts, rollcage, winch line, etc..)
GREASE EVERYTHING!!!!
This could save you a lot of time and embarrassment, not to mention a long walk back to town.

Things to make sure you take.

Blanket
Candy
Shovel
Snacks
whiskey
beer
chips
cookies
girls
dog
books/mags
guns/ammo
kids
wife
cat
coffee
just a few things I can think of that I'd like to have in case I broke down on the trail.

I have broke the "dont go alone" law to many times heh. I go with other people, but only my vehicle. I dont advise it unless you know the area and are prepaired to have to hike out if need be.

Few things not mentioned above: Spare tire, jack, TOOLS! You have got to have tools, and also, SPARES! I cary around quite a few spare parts with me in my cherokee, along with lots of tools. A few common parts to bring are the following:

1: U-Joints
2: Ignition module if you have electronic igntion, extra set of points if you are old fasioned
3: Some 14 guage wire (or around there, I have needed it before)
4: Fuel line
5: Vacuum caps (had a vacuum cap crack on me ont he trail, that sucked)

bah...got to go do some work, will finish list later.

I knew I missed some stuff last night, that's what I get for PUI (posting under the influence)
Also, a gas can is a good idea, as well as water, duck tape, bailing wire, and zip ties.

Allso in my case if i ever go mudding again, brake spoons! (found this out the hardway last trip, drove home with no brakes, having manual drums on all 4's has its disadvantages)

Ya might want to take your fire ext down from it's mount if it's been in the rig awhile. Then turn it upside down and bang it on your roll bar whatever a few times and then shake the dog :o:o:o:o:o out of it. The powder packs down from vibration after awhile. Nothing worse than jumping in to save the day and the thing just releases propellent and no powder and goes...phhhfffttt.
Also causes a dramatic increase in pucker factor if it's a serious burn.

Safety glasses and leather gloves.
First aid kit.
Flashlight.
Magnetic pick up thingy.
If going for a long trail ride, maybe a change of clothes. (Getting back in the rig smelling of gas is hell on the wife!)
Ivory soap; biodegradeable (see above).
1 or 2 MRE's.

I have to disagree here. Drinking while driving is not only illegal but not safe. Especially when out on a trail which is more dangerous then the street IMHO.

This is stuff you should check on a regular basis anyways

Yeah, but I check it before any off road use, regardless of when I last checked it, plus, when you check the basics, you are more likely to see any other potential problems, and fix them early.
