First Wheeling trip

I went on my first wheeling trip with the SoCalUltimate4X4 (SCUFF) club on the fourth with my bone stock '86 Waggy. I have to say, I was verry impressed with how tough and capible these rigs are. I had to be strapped a few times, but overall, I was happy with the performance.

I did run into one problem though. Every time I was inclined, I started leaking gas.
Are the stock gas caps supposed to seal? I was looking at mine a little more closely, and the female end of the filler is chewed up pretty bad. Is it easy to repalce the female end, or is there any other suggestions on how I can seal up the gas cap? With the price of gas these days and the gas mileage I get, I cannot afford to loose any gas. Thanks in advance.
