401. worth 500?

i found a guy down the street with a complete 401 out of a 77 cherokee. he says it ran fine when pulled (recent) #6 cylinder a little low. hes opting 2 put a 350 back in. was pulled from dads jeep(original owner) . this thing is totally complete, dist. ,700cfm carb, manifolds, etc, etc. very clean looking. says topend rebuilt 70 grand ago bottom end never touched. hes asking 500. worth it? i have a 76 cherokee w/t im currently working with a 401 and was planning on rebuilding it, but was not looking forward to the down time. im thinking build the new one, run old one till im done with other. comments?

Make sure it turns over FIRST!!!!

Unless you know the dude, I'm always leery about "ran when pulled" stuff. If it ran so well, why did they PULL IT?

he claims the normal stuff, the 350 being cheaper to work on and find parts. i ran the codes, that part of his story was legit. his father (original owner) was there as was the 77 it came out of. my brother, a local police officer(black sheep of the family) verified he was original owner. the guy lives whithin the city limits where my brother works, maybe i should mention that to him.

Heck, I sold a non-running block for almost that. Go for it.

I paid almost that much for a non-running one that the guy got out of a junk yard. Plus I had to pick it up in Chicago. I'd buy it if I were you. Even if you don't use it, you should be able to get at least what you paid for it.

I'd snap that 401 up before somebody else sniffs it out!
