I`m kinda doing a price list of what I need for an np 205 swap. I have a 465 style 205, and my AMC th400, All I need is the figure 8 style adaptor, chevy th400 4x4 output and the 32 spline short 205 input right? I know that I`ll have to have the input machined on to fit the larger bearing on the 205, how much has that costed you guys and what should I tell the machine shop guys to do since they probably haven`t done it before. Do I just give them the bearing for reference and set them loose on it? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have read on here a couple times about the clocking of the Jeep TH-400. You might run into a problem when you bolt on a chevy tailhousing. The trans mount wont be perfectly parrallel with the crossmember.

You know, I've got stuff in boxes all over my garage... buried, and bolted together and I've been wondering do you need to really mod your case to fit a larger bearing?
Yes the TH400 205 input bearing was larger, but was the input gear actually larger also... or can you just swap inputs? Hmmm, too easy?

Nope, the Bore has to be bored out bigger, as the larger input bearing (Outside Diameter) rests within the bore.

Got that much, but are the actual input dimensions or bearing ID the same?
...I'm off topic, sorry, thinking if you can put like a ford 31 spline input in the large bearing TH400 205 case, probably not.

But here is the breakdown.
Chevy 10 and 27 spline as well as the Dodge 23 spline are small bore cases and inputs can be swapped from one to the other.
Chevy 32 Spline, Dodge 29 Spline and Ford 31 Spline are LARGE bore cases and inputs can be swapped from one to the other.
If you have a small bore case, you will need to tear it apart have the bearing for the large bore case, and take it in and have it bored to the correct size. You also need the correct retainer and seal for the large bore.

Ah, thanks, I didn't know the "Dodge 29 Spline and Ford 31 Spline are LARGE bore cases". Very much appreciated... since I didn't have to get greasy to find that out.
rampagefsj, I've seen the charge for boring the small bore case at around $70.

I'd look into doing a NP203/205 Doubler setup. Off-Road Design makes the adaptors and has LOTS of great info about doing one, even for us Jeep guys!
Off-Road Design
I think it would be easier and way more benifical than just doing a NP205 swap alone. For one, the Doubler setup uses only the range box from the NP203 which is bolted onto the adapter with the NP205 bolted behind it. An overall low gear of 4:1 very benifical for wheelin'
That and it sounds like it is less work to find a NP203 that came from a GM TH400 and swap adaptors & stuff than trying to get the NP205 to work. The website will have more details for ya...

I know everything about those doublers, including the fact that all of them need to be used with a short input 32 spline 205. I`m also going to use a Northwest Fabrication doubler. Last time I looked, it`s cheaper and you are able to just loosen a couple of bolts to clock the T case anytime that you want. I don`t think I`ll mind the 205 being clocked on our style of tranny, I`ll just make a skid plate that protects it and is easy to slide with. I`m not doing a doubler yet because I don`t have enough money to do it yet.
