My Expedition Style Trailer: Build thread
soooo... 6-8 months ago i answered an ad on craigslist offering a free trailer... (kindof wish now that i had saved the original pic..) in exchange for the trailer i had to haul off all the trash with it...
after loading up my truck and stacking the trailer as high as i possibly could with all his garbage... i hauled it all to a buddies house a few miles away...
anyways... after sorting through some of the stuff, i sold off the three good tires for $20 a piece, and gave some concrete and other stuff to my buddy and used a water bill for a free trip to the dump... and the trailer was mine...
i used some of the money to do a leaf-over on the trailer and get it up in the air a bit... from that point i actually have pictures...
and no... i'm not trying to pad my post count... just using up some posts so that i can compress them later and keep my build thread complete...

this is immediately after i finally got it home... (after the leaf over)
in pretty good shape for a free trailer... though it had some kinks to work out...

after a little sanding/staining, and some painting it's already looking better...
then i cut a rock gaurd for the front of it... just to keep rocks from tearing it up...

the next step was to re-inforce some stuff... so that i didn't have to worry about dragging it across rocks and whatnot...
a 1/4" thick Hardox armor plate (courtesy of work) for the ammo-cans to sit on (can't be drilled unfortunately...)

one day while backing it up... i found the limits of my turning abilities... no damage done... but it's a bit too tight... so i stretched out the tongue...
before:
after:
it's got two pins in it... so i can stretch it out... or collapse it if i need to... or remove it completely and put in another type of coupler on it (can you say pintle hitch???)

but... what's the point in having a trailer when it's only a foot and a half off the ground...
so i lifted it... again...
before:
after:
mocking it up to see if the tires would clear the fenders...

we use it in haul truck bodies at work... has to be cut with a plaz... these were some test plates that one of the guys at work gave me... it's some super strong, super hard stuff... not really structural but it'll take one helluva hit from a rock before it'll even leave a scratch...

actually... everything except for the bolts for the leaf-over, and the ammo cans has been free...
at that point... i just don't bother... i've run them down the road at 75 mph with no problems before... if i get a bad one eventually i'd like to try a trick that i've heard about... but i've never needed it...

Not bad for free!! LOL
You've got a lot of work on it and it looks good. Smart move on the longer tongue. It will tow much better than a short trailer.

one of the other thing i did while building the trailer was to put a front reciever hitch into my front bumper... so that i can hook up to the trailer from the other end end and push it into place... if i'm putting it into a really tight spot... though with it lifted now it's much easier to see where the trailer is for backing it up...
