727 question

I am pulling the tranfercase out of an 88 waggy for my 87 waggy. My question is what do I need to do to change the 88 from 4wheel drive to 2wheel drive as this is going to be used only for towing my 87 to the trails and back. Do I need to change the whole transmission or just add a tailshaft to the trans. It is a stock 727.

You have to pull the tranny all the way apart and change the output shaft too. Unless you can find an AMC 2wd 727 from a car, you will need to get a Chrysler 2wd 727 and take them both apart to do the swap.

I would think it would be easier to just leave the transfer case in the 88 and buy another for the 87. That way you only have to work on one vehicle.
