has anyone out there used the cut out flares offered by jc whitney? iknow bush wacker offers them along w/ afew other companies, but personally i think 350-400$ is a bit steep. if you have any other suggestions, i am open to any.

Is this for a Wag, Chero N/T or Chero W/T?
On my Chero W/T, its got he factory flares cut out and I'm running 33" with a 2.5" lift.

cherokee n/t 1978. i though w/t,n/t fenders were the same, except for larger opening and flares?

I want to hear more about these flares and FSJ's. I have been thinking about playing with my sawzall BUT I want to end up with a good looking finished product and NOT like a hack job.
So let's hear some more about this!

A 78 cherokee is most likely a 2dr, but they did have 4dr cherokees then. The rear fenders are quite a bit different. The tub and fender flare are one piece, and as todd showed, not easy as one may think to adapt on. Although if you have a 2dr, you dont have to move it back.
Sambo did a WT conversion on his cherokee, he may pop in here and give some more detailed info.

I will be in transition of retiring from the Marine Corps and settling in a new carreer at that time... I'll have to see if its at all possible.... but I would LOVE to attend....

Todd, will you please give more detail on moving your axle back? Can this also be done to make room for the fiberglass flares? did your steel flares come from a w/t chero.?

yes.. flares were 'donated' from a W/T chero... 
If the flares are made for 2 doors you will need to relocate.. if for the 4 doors.. no... no need. I had never had luck finding the glass flares for the 4 doors....
HEIMEKEN did an AWESOME JOB using XJ Aftermarket Flares on is Waggie...
as for relocating the axle... not sure what you would do if you didn't go SOA... you can probably use the same springs I did ( 96 Burb springs w/o overloads and then relocate the rear shackle boxes further back on the frame to get them to sit correctly...
Since I was SOA already, and had my shackle flip installed... I just swapped left and right flip brackets and adjusted accordingly....
original FSJ springs..
comparison of springs ( overloads removed)
With front eyes aligned... the axle location is 4.5" to the rear
AFter swaping left and right shackle flip brackets and installing/adjusting....
These springs gain about 2" of additional lift...

MALS-11 in Miramar...
No ... I just moved north to buy a house and settle.. that way I wont have to again after I retire... the 140 miles daily commute isnt all that bad... after you do it a while...

Hey Todd, First off I also wanted to say thanks for your service in the Corps. My nephew Rick is in the Corps in Iraq and I have a few friends serving as well. Thanks again for your service!
Secondly I had some questions about the flares and the springs you used. I'm pretty sure that my '76 Chero 2 door is a NT, but either way I have been wanting flares so I don't have to run with mudflaps.  How far out do the steel flares stick out away from the body?
Thirdly I'm going to attempt to send you a PM with pics of my home-grown block eliminator so you can tell me if I could run the rear springs you used. Besides the 2" of lift they offer, it might be nice if they set my rear axle back a lil bit for an ever so slightly better departure angle. I have the same axle set-up as yours and with my eliminator it sits level to maybe a 1/2" rise in the rear. The rear looks like it has an AAL, not sure if that accounts for the 1/2" rise or not.
Oh yeah, what springs did you use up front?

I was going to send you a hand drawn scale picture of the rear fender along with the dimensions but I only had the front fender in my computer and my dadgum scanner is bein' a PITA. 
BTW, how do you like the extended wheelbase over the stock?
