Drove my truck 30 miles to the shop and onto the lift - no prob. Installed 4" skyjacker, 35's, 4.10's and posi to boot .. no problem.
Take the truck off of the lift for the test drive and the tranny has taken a sdump. Itt'l go into drive (1st) and reverse. When I dropped it into drive and took off it'll haul *** untill it tries to shift into second, then it clatters around and locks up the rear wheels it does the same when I drop it into second directly. no power and locksup the wheels. The transfer canse/tranny makes a crap load of noise at the same time..
QUESTION IS... if I gotta rebuild/replace the tranny. Is there a tough aftermarket alternative for the 727 that'l bolt up to my 360/x-fer combo? or would a rebuild be my best most economic option. I don't want it to brfeak again...
Any help would be great.

Head down 290 towards Dripp and there in Cedar Valley is Pistols Trans. They do good work.

B&M makes heavy duty clutches. That combined with a shift kit so you shift at higher pressure and auxiliary transmission coolers would seem like the way to go. I've got the coolers already, installing a shift kit soon...

Previous threads have discussed this. Unless you are very mechanically inclined go to a trans shop and have them rebuild it. There aren't a lot of parts to break but it sounds like you have a servo or or valve problem. Probably a seal is bad on a servo. I read a bulletin that talked about one of the servos being able to bind and a quick modification fixed it. Put in a reprogramming kit when you rebuild it though. The 727 doesn't circulate oil in park in it's factory configuration, but a few additional holes and slots in the right places fixes that.
I just got done rebuilding mine and added a Transgo reprogramming kit and I am very happy with the results. Beyond crisp strong shifts I can pull it into 2nd or low at any speed.
I wouldn't suggest a junk yard trans since you would only be buying a little time. And the labor to change the trans is the killer.
Oh yeah one more thing. If you pull your own out be sure to mark the correct position of the torque converter to the flex plate. They only go one way and are a pain to figure out on your back on a creeper.

thanks Zako, I don't use creepers anymore , We've got a shop down in South Austin (slaughter/Manchaca area) with two Hydraulic lifts. How much was the reprogrammer thing? Is that just a shift kit or what??
Anyways, thanks anybody wanna get together one week end, let me know.

I think the reprogram kit was about $80. I got it the same time as the overhaul kit and together they were $150.
It was a little more than a shift kit, it had new springs for the servos, a new throttle valve and a few other goodies. It also had instructions for mods to the valve body and servo pistons.
I got the Trans-Go TF-2 kit.
The B&M shift kits I've installed in the past weren't as intensive as this was. It had good instructions and the only problem I had was one of the pictures was a little light but I made it out. Trans-Gos customer service doesn't exist though. They don't have a website and I could never get them on the phone.

I would have a pro trans shop rebuild the
trans you have with HD B&M upgraded parts.
You might want to research the weak areas
of 727 transmissions and make sure the shop you
choose knows how to upgrade all of the weak
points while they are fixing whatever broke.

GlenTx...Shop is behingd the Albertson's at Slaughter and Manchaca, you actually have to cross the railroad tracks heading east and take your first right after manchaca.
THere's actually two Ferraris...One is a 1983 512 BBI (import). Flat or "opposed" 12 cylinder , mid-engine. One of 1007 made.
The second we just picked up yesterday. Its a 355 challnge factory race car. Bad boy.. 0-60 in 4.2 top speed of 197 mp/h.
YOu should come out to the shop sometime and I'll show you around. Excellent, cheap mechanic work there too if anyone's in need
