Cutting a hole in ones hood is not an action which should be undertaken lightly...I pulled some stuff from the junkyard, and mocked it up, but none of it looked right. I'm glad my buddy gave me the boat catalog.
I think that heat killed my last carb, the accel. pump diaphragm was kinda deformed and looked almost melted. I'm very happy w/ my 2 electric fan system, but I want to increase its effectiveness and give the heat a place to go @ short stoplights when I don't want the fans to turn on.. I got these awesom 4x12x7/8 SS vents from west marine.
model number 386559 SFVEN#13585
mock up...
approximately where the vents will come thru on the other side, I've got the 3/8 water heater insulation upgrade on the underside of my hood.
I propped up the hood and put a tarp across the engine bay... one down.
pretty happy w/ the fit...
view from underneath... please lets keep the comments tasteful regarding my getto fab brake reservoir lid tiedown.
all done...
I used stainless #8x1/2 sheet metal screw (which I will probably change to rivets) and a little black rtv
guess I need to think about painting the beast pretty soon.
cheers,
Robert

They look good, I think once you get a coat of paint on there they'll really look great.

Actually that looks pretty good...wonder what it would look like down the side on the fender or near the rear behind the w/w about where the chrome moulding sits?
What did the pair set you back?

The vents look great.
But I'm wondering about the underhood insulation. If you think that heat may have been a factor in your carburetor failure, why are you trying to keep all that heat in by insulating the under side of the hood?
Taking the insulation out would probably lower the underhood temperature.

thanks everyone for the replies, yeah my buddy wanted me to mount them on the quarter panels, (like on a boat)....
anyway, I was just looking for unobtrusive vents that weren't made out of anything rustable or meltable, and I'm pretty sure thats what I ended up w/.
Illegal-I put the insulation on when I still had a mechanical fan, mostly for noise insulation reasons, also to keep the rest of the car cooler, and b/c I think it looks cool, but it really did raise the underhood temps.
I have not started the engine yet, but I know its gonna be much louder now, and hopefully much cooler. I will post the results.

Those look good. How much were they? I use a hood scoop on mine with no insulation. Yes lots of engine noise but I don't overheat. In the summer the heat waves actually obscure your view in front of the scoop.

Looks sweet, but why use RTV if water will get in through the vents and rust stuff in the engine compartment anyway?
Gotta second losing the foil reflecting the heat down. I think that is a big source of the temp problems.

looks great man! Think you've started a trend
I guess if I cant have a blower peekin up through the hood, the vents would do
much better on top, dont think they'd do much good on the sides, unless they were reversed to catch air and force it in, but from what I've gathered, our trucks are already well designed for suckin air up from underneath (and rocks, shrubs, small animals..)

I used rtv to make sure they will never rattle or vibrate loose.
Not concerned about rust, theres too many oil leaks under there to allow any rust to form.
Model numbers are posted under the first pic.
I will definately be keeping the foil faced insulation.
still have not driven it yet.
