Inner tailgate wipe doesn't fit...

I picked up an inner tailgate wipe at the PA Jeeps show from Zack at Z&M in July and I finally got around to trying to install it on the '77 Chief.

The clips don't align with the slots in the tailgate note even close really...I think just about all of them are off.

Zack told me it would fit '74 to '91...and BJ's site states the same year range for theirs.

Did they change the tailgates at some point?

Anyone else have this issue? I suppose I could remove the clips and reposition them on the wipe but what a pain in the tuckus.

I wonder if it's an outer wipe instead? May want to email Zack and let him know, he may have come across this before.

Yeah I was thinking that might be a possibility but it doesn't have the skirt that the outer one has that wraps over the tailgate a bit to keep the water from flowing down inside the tailgate. Here is a pic:

That looks like the outer with the chrome trim and the stepped end. The inner was more like felt to protect the defrost heater grid.

Dean, I replaced those once back in about 1986.

I just went out and took a closer look and compared it to my existing outer wipe...and sure enough the clips line up. They must have changed the design on the outer wipe at some point to include the skirt.

This one must be an NOS original...I don't think they make them with the chrome strip anymore.

Either way it's not what I need. My existing outer wipe is in great shape...and the newer design seems better anyway.

Thanks for the replies guys...
