my project has an 87 gw wireing system with a th400 trany all the motor wires are hooked up.i can't figure out how to hook up the neutral safty switch. the th400 has one wire from the tranny, and the 87 has 3 wires from the tranny.
is their a way to conect them together,or can i bypass the neutral safety switch all together?

Ground the NSS wire off the solenoid to the fender. It will be grounded always so your Wagon will start in any gear.

that wire on the 400 is the kickdown.the switch was on the gas pedal,to kick it into passing gear when floored. the safety switch for the 400 equipped rigs is on the base of the steering column.

bypass it. Not sure on the 87 wiring but the 70s columns, just unplug it from the lower column and bridge with a small piece of wire.

PS the one wire to the Th400 is for the kickdown, which is a plunger contact switch on the gas pedal..when you floor it, it activate the switch and tells the Th400 to downshift into passing gear.

well sounds like you will need to wire your back up lights (which I assume just brake lights) to your brake light wires (whatever triggers those). I cant think of any other way to trigger the lights when in reverse, the Th400 has no output for that.
The KICKDOWN(not the NSS) is controlled like RISTOW said from a switch on your gas pedal. They are like 15 bux at napa, standard GM Th400 kickdown switch, you can swap in a pedal with the bracket if you want it. I consider it unneeded for someone with a brain :P Its nice to be able to start in gear when on the rocks if you stall and the driveline is all twisted up and shifting may not be an option.
just my opinion looking at the 'problem'.

This statement does not sit well with me...
The switch on the pedal is for kick-down, the switch at the base of the steering column on the older stuff is the nss (neutral safety switch), Right? Just dont want to confuse anyone.
I tried to put an NSS at the bottom of my '85 column. I dont know if I miss aligned it, or was already, but it broke. I have another and am going to try and hook it up so I get reverse lights. I will try to take notes for sharin...

With the 87 wiring, one wire from the nss runs to the underside of the starter solenoid. When the tranny is in park or neutral that wire is grounded inside the tranny allowing the starter solenoid to work and start the engine. When in the drive gears, the wire is not grounded not allowing the solenoid to work. To just bypass that wire, you can just ground that wire to the fenderwell if you don't mind it starting in any gear (which is handy if you offroad and the engine stalls). You could just go ahead and put a normal Ford solenoid on the truck that doesn't have the nss prong on it.

The 3 wires to the switch are there because the switch on the 727 is a combination neutral safety/back-up lamp switch.
Wiring diagram will show this.
TH 400 has separate switches.
Check the wiring diagrams for each and you will see which wires to use.
