Just another reason I love my FSJ

Some guys may moan abit about the $$ they may have to put into their FSJ, but I find many parts to be quite inexpensive compared to newer SUV's. I was at my buddy's shop yesterday. He's an old school mechanic who has had his own FSJ's and been in the biz since 1964. Great guy and work at a fair price. He showed me 2 SUV's, a very recent small Honda and an 03 Excursion parked at his shop. He told me he had felt almost guilty telling the owners what the repair costs would be and what happened when he told them.

This 2-3 year old Honda something or other (nice looking SUV) needed a new exhaust system and he had felt bad when he priced the job and had to tell the owner it would cost about $1000. The owner said "do it 'cuz the dealer and the other shop I went to wanted over $1400". Pricey parts, I guess? My GW exhaust is a fraction of the price.

Now the Excursion needs an exhaust and 2 cats replaced. That job is a bit more and same result, owner said "please do it as soon as you can."

Had a BMW X-3 there on the way to a body shop. Front was pushed in a bit, all plastic and some metal. No bumper to speak of. Did not look like it would be a big job, but the body shop is charging $3200 for the plastic. If the same thing happened to my GW---I might need a new bumper.

Actually, the FSJ is a bargain. Except meybe for some tantrums and gas.

Hey, the tantrums save money - they're cathartic and keep us from having to see a shrink!

Great story, thanks!

I agree with you 100%!! My wifes car is a 4x4 V10 Excursion, I have a Mercedes wagon....my DD is my '86 waggy!! Parts are cheap, usually I can fix it but if not one of my best buds owns a garage. He treats me right, little break on labor, biggest thing is peace of mind knowing Im not getting screwed! I cringe when the Ex or the MB need something I cant fix....really no biggy with the Jeep though! Oh and Ive had no problem ever getting parts. Im lucky I have a really good NAPA and CarQuest!!

The brake job on my mom's 98-99 C280 Benz is around 500$. Any work on my dads' e46 BMW is even more expensive. Everything on German cars are expensive, they require special tools to do basic maintenance on them (like changing the disc-brake pads out).

My sister's well-abused ford exploder is about half that expense, but it adds up because she doesn't do any maintenance on it, and says "only mechanics have to check that stuff" (stuff = radiator fluid, oil, etc). She ran that thing COMPLETELY dry (oil AND radiator fluid.. gone).

Our 08 Patriot .. lets just say, we can't even FIND the parts for our Jeep (Namely, the rear drum-brake pads). Apparently Chrysler only wants you to buy them at the dealer, because there are NO shops that carry them.. for ANY of the MK vehicles.

The Cherokee is by-far the cheapest, and I have YET to drive it. lol
(500$ and free parts to get him running.. that I am waiting for, so I can pull him out of storage)
