      Clackety clack clack

I don't have this issue currently with two AMC 8's I'm running. I imagine there are a lot of others that don't as well but since it's no issue for them they just don't chime in???? I think the most important thing is to determine that it is a lifter for certain! It definately takes two people and a lot of cold starts!

Cold start noise is oil starvation/excessive clearances.
Thicker oil is only going to make it WORSE.
Vr1 50w is racing oil, and not really suited for a daily driven street engine.

Stick with lower weight quality oil like 10w-30.

I used to run 15w-40 for a time in my '88, one of the reasons I stopped was the cold start rattle it caused.
Went back to 10w-30 no more noises.

If you use the early style filter, use a Baldwin B9, B39, Purolator L30005, or ACDelco PF24. Baldwins are hard to find, Purolators come from Pep Boys, and the AC from O'Reilly's. You usually have to ask at the counter for those filters.
What's up with this? My napa filter is a 1626?

You have the correct filter, he is stuck in the 70's.

Mine has always done this. Every engine I've known with hydraulic lifters does this. It's normal, the spring pressure squeezes the oil out of the lifter when it sits, so when you go to start it it makes noise. As long as it doesn't tap for more than a few seconds its fine. The owners manual in both my j10 and my brothers Comanche says its a normal occurrence.
