    discussion - date set April 16-18, 2009

Is it too early to start some <gulp> planning on this? I see the EJS is gonna be April 4-12. I would like to propose we consider one or two weeks after that. We could do Thursday, Friday, Saturday rides. That would be 4/16-18 or 4/23-25. Thoughts?

Don't get me worng about EJS, it is just so nice to be on the trails with FSJ brethren without all the other traffic that EJS has to offer.

OK - I have heard from a couple others through the CFSJA connection. Further research shows the April Action Car show is scheduled the 24th through the 26th. That draws a lot of people to Moab. We have been there when the car show is going on and there is more traffic to deal with in town not to mention competition for reservations.

So... I think 4/16-18 is the best bet for us. I think for the sake of keeping it simple, the Moab FSJ Invasion name will work. If anyone objects, please speak up. Thanks

4/16-18. Moab FSJ Invasion. I like it. I need to make this for sure! Been wheeling in Colorado and Arizona all my life and never made it to Moab. It's time.

What's the recommended equipment as far as height, lockers, tires, that sort of thing?

Do you have a base camp in one place and do day runs, or do you camp in a different place each night?

Never been to Moab... Heck, the only off roading we've done outside So. Cal. was the 02 Ouray Invasion...

Can work it a bunch of ways. For the hardcore stuff, I and others get by with 33's and 4" lift and dual lockers altho rear locker would be enuf. You can get through a lot of trails with less lift, less tires.

As for overnight... I like to stay at Bighorn Lodge but there are others that are good. Lots of camping options. What is the CG we do, Sand Flats which is pretty good but with wind is... sandy. There are lots of less developed CGs along the river / 128 and elsewhere. Lots of options.

I have managed a lot of trails there with 32s and 33s with a rear locker and 4" lift. There are a few trails I would not attempt without another locker. The trails change with weather, use and errosion too. We did Steel Bender in 02 with open diffs. Last year we went the easy direction from N to S and there is a step that would be tough to pull with a single locker going S to N.

I have done camping in Moab and enjoyed it, even with frosty mornings. We have taken to like having stuff we don't need on the trail locked in a motel room lately and the Bighorn Lodge is a good spot for that. Besides, we can wrench on flat concrete there and they are dog friendly.

I'm in, and if you don't mind scraping some metal a stock Jeep can do quite a few of the trails, especially if the suspension is soft and compliant and worn out in order to facilitate increased articulation.
