Gateway Buckshot tires

what happened to the Gateway Buckshot's mudders? Can't find them on web.

I ran a set ( Q's -35"? seems to jog memory) on an old Ford 3/4 ton with 16.5 in the mid 80's.

The tread was like over an inch in depth, howeled like the coyote's on a full moon.
Only lasted about 5,000 miles, well the Ford had built 460 and I was young with a real heavy right foot.

Not that Maxxis is a bad tire as I've got some on trailer.

tread only 19/32" and no 16.5 rims at all.

Dang, I thought I had tires picked out.

Those Gateway's, although narrow by today's standard, ruled.
Probably softer than competition tires, they sure didn't last, but were cheap and effective.

It took big HP to spin them they gripped so good.
I rememeber the treads being way deeper than anything I've ever seen including the 39.5 Boggers I ran on Scrambler for while.

When they were new you could really feel the tire give & flex going around corners.

the maxxis buckshot mudder is a pretty soft tire. i run 33's on my wag. i really like them, they will dig bigtime. if you want a mostly on road tire the maxxis bighorn wears better on the highway. most to the oil well service trucks in my area are switching to them over the buckshots in order for them to last longer. although i do like the look of the bighorn better than the buckshots, the buckshots go better offroad due to the softer rubber and more sipes. IMHO

i'd disagree on the difference between the buckshots and the bighorns. i'm running the bighorns on my full size chevy pickup, and while they aren't too noisy, i'm sure the buckshots would have better road manners because the side lugs of the bighorns are so far apart. i'd rather run the buckshots on the road and the bighorns offroad. the bighorns grip like crazy too, and are a pretty soft compound.

they were made by interco under the gateway design and they prolly stoped making them in 1992 when this happened

ive got a set of them, gateway buckshots, q's something everything ive found says there 35" tall but next to my 35 swampers i had on my cj5 frame they stood at least 2-3" taller...they are nice tires and mine only have about 100 miles on them right now as they are wating for me to build a rig for them

Denman Tire Corporation use to have them listed a few months back but do not any more. one of the 4 wheeling mags did a write up on the gateway tires. they were a Q-78 tire (35.5" tall, 10.5" wide).

i did find the tire but in some other sizes.

Dennis, you may know this but I'm pretty sure you can still the TSL Super Swamper in a Q78.

***edit, well maybe the TSL Q78 is only in 15 & 16" rims... that ain't gonna help since you just bought them nice 16.5" rims.

Buckshot's

The OK tire place show's the real Gateway Buckshot's.

Looks like Maxxis made a reproduction and used Buckshot name but not anywhere close to origional tire. 19/32 is just 1/2" tread.

I looked in my old bronco file and found where tread depth was indeed
1" in depth.

I'm mostly going for the old school look these give, they're really terrible street tire's. But Glad prob won't get 5000 miles in 15 years.
I need/want a tall narrow tire 35 x 10.5 on Kaiserman's 8.25" wide slots.

Real Buckshots must be discontinued, probably why don't see on trucks in magazines anymore.

my only reasoning behind the differences are the size of the space between the lugs on the buckshots compared the the lugs on the bighorns. the lugs on the buckshots are farther apart than the bighorns on the 33" tires. i personally like the looks of the bighorn more than the buckshots. i havent had the bighorns on the wag but i have done a side by side comparison. that was the reason i chose the buckhots. i just wish the buckshots had the side biters that the bighorns had, that would be cool.

on a side not with the name, i think maxxis got away with the name because they added mudder to the name.

Gateway Buckshot

No longer made , some inventory still floating around in 15".

Maxxis took over production and tread is similar but lugs are 1/2" instead of 1" deep.

Guess - I gotta pick another tire (Swamper or BFG) or do another
worldwide NOS tire search...

I like finding the impossible.
