    KJ-65 Automatic Transmission swap

    Hello All,

When i picked up my '65 Rhino it came with a spare Automatic Tranny that the owner ordered specifically for the truck. The tin name badge says "KJ-65- 5395" on it and it came w/ a torque converter. Thing is when i looked at my 327 this weekend the starter is on the passenger side and on the transmission the starter lobe is on the driver side. I noticed that the block has cutouts on both sides for a starter but the oil filter is on that spot. so...

    1. Is this the right transmission for this truck?
    2. Is there a remote oil filter setup to move that out of the way?
    3. Can i swap the starter to the other side wo/ too much hassle?

    Thanks,
    Morgan in SF

Stock AT would have been the TH400 with the Buick "nailhead" bolt patten and used with a factory adapter to bolt it to the 327 bolt pattern. Yours might be stock. Been out of the Chev loop a long time but the kj-65-5395 ID number sure sounds like it could be a GM built TH400 ID number for a trans used by Kaiser. I've got a book buried somewhere in my house with GM AT number translations. If I find it I'll get back to ya.

      More Details...

      Looking here...

It does resemble a TH400 but again w/ the Starter kickout on the driver side. It mounted to a transfercase w/ the weird Wagoneer "bent" 4WD lever on the top.

I also found an auto shift column, NOS flex plate and oil cooler... so, thoughts?

        327 adaptor kit info

So seems i need to track down a 327 to TH400 adaptor ring. Since they're all used at this point does anyone know exactly what parts were included to set this up?

Seems the vital bits are the Adaptor Ring and the crank spacer? Nuts and bolts should all be standard sizes and i have a flexplate... anything else?

If it's a spare transmission, isn't there already a transmission in the Jeep? If so, you can reuse the adapter ring and any additional parts needed. Some of these TH400s with the adapter ring also used an additional adapter (crank spacer) to support the snout of the torque converter.

There is a parts catalog here http://oljeep.com/parts_man/62-73_FS...talog_w_bm.pdf that should show the needed parts. I'm at work and can't download it now, but I can look later if you have trouble finding the parts and/or illustration.

Post pictures of what you have now.

It's a manual to auto swap

It's got a 3 speed (w/ chipped teeth on the 1st) in it right now so no adaptor on it currently. I'll follow up w/ pics ASAP.

thanks for the link to the parts book, i'll dig through it at lunch.

                progress!

The 3 speed is out and once i get the adaptor ring and spacer should be GTG. Also, found a weaping freeze plug on the back ofthe block so will be addressing that before finishing up.

The adaptor I am sending you has the starter on the pass side. There is also a spacer that goes betwene the starter and adaptor, it is in the box also.
                  I have a picture of it .

                    U-joint Flange

Anyone dealt w/ this on the back of their Transfercase? Wondering what size driveshaft/u-joint yoke to order... looking around wo/ seeing anything that it matches up to size-wise. It's def using 1310 style u-joints.
