    Stupid newbie question

How do you correctly install a thermostat? How do I know it isn't backwards, upside down, etc.

Sorry about the stupid question, but I want to make sure I install everything carefully and correctly.

I am almost ready to fire the motor over and to get this FSJ on the road again. Just finishing up some of the little things, like the thermostat for instance.

Also, make sure that you don't go overboard with gasket sealant or it can get into the thermostat and create a restriction that can lead to overheating.

The most common mistake is to not seat the thermostat correctly. If not, when you tighten you can break the housing.

Make sure you tighten the housing evenly. I made the mistake one time of over-tightening one side first and snapped the mounting ear off the housing. Also, go easy on any gasket sealant. I use just enough to keep the gasket from moving around.
