HELLO...new guy and soon to be J10 owner w pics!

    well hello!

glad to finally be able to post here. i am in the process of acquiring a j10 from a friend. basically i've always wanted a j truck and he has always wanted a grand wagoneer. a month ago i went to pick an xj up from a guy and he actually had this sitting on his lot:

bingo...so now i am buying this grand wagoneer for my buddy, who is in turn going to trade me for his 1983 j10. i'm not sure if its an even trade or not, but i feel like the deal makes sense. the j10 runs, the waggy doesn't...waggy is loaded, but the j10 is very basic. j10 has VERY little rust...waggy is going to need some patching.

here is the j10 as it sits now:

the j10 is a 258 but i'm a little unsure of the tranny tcase set up...i have been told its a tf999 and an np208? does that sound right? i know its a 2hi 4hi n 4lo case...but i don't have it in my possession yet, so i really have no idea.

plans are to strip it down to the frame and sand, paint and seal the frame. should be easy, there is very little rust on the frame...in fact it still has a lot of paint on it.

after the frame is done, i'm going to clean, sand and paint the exterior, bedline the bottom of the truck and the inside of the box and re upholster, clean, fix the interior.

for now i'm going to tune up the 258, then in a year or two i'm going to start working on a 4bt to drop in it....that might be slightly wishful thinking at this point, but i've been known to pull off a few projects when i set my mind to it! at that point ill have to lift it slightly, but i don't want it to get to big. this truck would be for pulling a boat and a small trailer for camping, hunting and fishing excursions.

as for me, i live in iowa and this is my first fsj, so i apologize for any repeat questions. i own a lifted xj already and i've done all the work on it...i'm not afraid of a wrench and a little elbow grease. good to be here and i'll keep posting pics/build progress as it comes!

I don't know about the trade, seems overly complicated but whatever works for you.

And I second the 4bt swap. If it hadn't taken me 6 months to finish my 4" lift, I would probably be looking this way. 20-25mpg sounds very good right now.

Welcome to the land of empty pockets and unfinished projects...

It looks like you found a keeper, congrats.
If the 4BT dont pan out, you could use the crank and rods from that 258 into a 4.0 and have a stroker that would push that truck around nicely.

ha...no its not complicated. he just saved the j10 from the scrap yard and didn't want to keep it, so i'm buying him the waggy since he is low on funds right now.

the restore should be pretty painless...the driver front fender is jacked, so is the front grill and part of the hood, but i've located replacements at jy's here for pretty cheap. there is one tiny spot that will need to be patched by the gutter rails on the roof. floor pans are rock solid, frame is about as good as it gets on a midwest vehicle. box has no rust on the bottom, however some dummy must have covered some rust on the side walls of the box by screwing/riveting a few sheet metal patches in. i'm going to have some of my body shop buddies cut the panels out and fix them...they do good work in exchange for steel and beer.

as for the 4bt, its a ways off still. i do know a few diesel nerds though so it won't be impossible. i'm hoping i can convince my buddies little brother to help me...he's a busy guy and doesn't work for free, but he just built this 12v 6bt for his mutant chevy pickup he is building

ha...actually the 258 is probably going to be used to build a stroker for the xj

Sounds like me. I have a '51 Willys wagon thats going onto an '85 GW frame and axles and will get a 4.5 stroker with manual behind it.
That 6BT is just pure porn there...

j10 has been delivered! cant wait to get started on this gal...4.2 will start but wont stay running unless you give it gas. im guessing i need a carb rebuild, tune up and some fresh gas. i'm slightly worried about doing the carb rebuild/tune myself. i've done outboards before, but never a truck...should be an adventure.

                  Welcome from California!

Does your carb look like this?

I can help you there if it is yours. This is my carb, and i've been into it many times, and multiple complete tear-downs and rebuilds, and i'd be more than willing to give you some advice. Just PM me. Also, being an 83, if it has this carb, the carb is gonna be computer controlled (crazy, huh?), and i would highly suggest a nutter bypass (http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/ele...jn-ignition99/) for now, and look for a motorcraft 2100 or 2150 to swap on in its place later (the BBD isn't a great carb). and if you're in an area where they smog/inspect, be sure you make the nutter bypass reversible so you can pass. these links will have some very helpful info for you http://www.jeeptech.com/engine/carter.html http://home.sprynet.com/~dale02/list.htm

rebuild the carb first, then do the nutter bypass and set the idle mixture right, and see how it does then. Feel free to PM me with any questions. looks like you got a good start to an awesome project there.

I didn't see the part about you should probably put in fresh gas. do you know how long it sat? if it sat for at least 3 years, definitely drain the tank and put fresh gas in it. my cherokee sat for 15 years and you should have seen the junk that the old gas turned it to. just picture about half of my tank being full of thick, sticky brown sludge that smells about 3 times worse than normal gasoline. not a pretty sight, and it will do bad stuff to your engine/fuel pump/carb. if you don't have a fuel filter in line between your tank and pump, that should be a top priority. and just another tip that it took me a while to figure out: if you have the same carb as me, it makes it a lot easier to remove from the intake if you first take off the bracket on the front holding the idle solenoid and dashpot, and disconnect and move all vacuum/fuel lines from in front of the carb. i was amazed that i didn't figure that out before.

It looks like a nice solid J10. Trade a common G-Wagon for a clean long box two-tone J10? Sounds like you did great to me!

Bad part is it's not going to have much power with that 6 mated to an auto (which should be the TF999 as you mentioned). I'd personally drop a stick shift behind it and mod the 258 a bit. They are great motors once you get them running right. A 2bbl swap is a good first step in that direction.

If you want to keep the 1bbl for now, send me a PM. I have a one year old reman carb for that truck.

That truck shouldn't have a 1 bbl, unless someone did a conversion on it. IIRC, AMC stopped putting 1 bbl carbs on the 258 in the mid 70's. the carter bbd is a 2 bbl

Yeah, your right. I forget those things are 2bbl's. They are such a weird looking carb.

They have nothing on a real 2bbl carb though. A 2100/2150 would be a major improvement.

yup...thats the one. the gas is probably less than 2 years old, but it smells pretty varnishy to me. it looks like it would be simple to drop the tank and clean it out. i just want to do it for piece of mind. i am pulling the box off first when i get back anyway. while im working on getting the engine running right, im going to clean and seal up the frame in the back and replace any lines that need work.

it does have an inline fuel filter on it, and it was just put on so im not worried about it...i am definitely going to do the nutter bypass, that is exactly what the engine is doing. looks fairly straight forward. i know a guy that has a ton of old fords sitting around too, so i might be able to get a mc2100 or 2150 for free. i live in iowa so emissions testing is not anywhere on the radar for this vehicle anyway. for now i'm going to tune up and get the 258 running well enough to pull my v hull boat and a small trailer around. i've already started looking for a 4bt candidate...so i don't want to build this motor/tranny too much. it won't be daily driven, so it will be fine for now. the lakes i fish are 15 and 25 minutes away so it should be fine.

basically i have $300 in the project plus some gas, a chryco 8.25 and dana 30 axle from my xj, and some gas money in this truck so i would say i am more than pleased to have a j10 that runs and has very little rust. my buddy that traded me the waggy just joined up to. im hoping we can get his 360 going soon so he can get another fsj back on the road. he has a little frame rot to deal with but still has a solid platform for a great gw build. he already got the rhino grill and headlight/ pie pan set to do a conversion on it so i know he will be moving faster than me
