    initial setup

I have finally got my engine running after almost a year.
rebuilt engine. bored 20 over, compcam 260H, 2131 edle intake, 1806 edle carb. using msd6a ignition stock dizzy...

pulling 12" vac at 600 rpm 5 degree advance goes to 26 degrees with manifold vac advance.. running pretty smooth..

any tips or tricks to get it tuned? just looking for a little guidance..

    thanks
    Mike

Nothing really, I?ve just driven it around the block a couple of times. I?m guessing it?s decent. No pinging or anything.
Just taking it easy breaking it in. After all this time, I don?t want to miss something and jack it up again.

        12” vacuum seems very low?
Do you mean 5* initial timing? Also really low 10* is stock I usually run 12-15* initial.

If it is running good now with no overheat, low oil pressure, or pinging, run it for break in then start with adjustments to timing and carb. more import to get the break in done right before moving on to performance adjustments. I will usually swap oil filter after the first 100 miles and then oil and filter at 500 and final 1000 miles, all with good oil and break in additive. This maybe over kill but my motors never have a problem, cheap insurance. Yes your timing is off a little but not sure of the rebuild set up you have. tooth off, cam dialed in, etc. but your close!

5 degrees initial is smog timing. go for 12-15 degrees.

Thanks for the input everyone. Yes. 12? at 5° initial ?- and I?m running a little warm. I?ll bump it to 10°-12° And set idle to 600 from there. Then check what it is with vac advance.

so.. as life gets in the way, figuring things out is taking more time than i had hoped..

initial timing is around 12*. running decient.. but i'm getting hot. just driving it around the block, temps reach just north of 220F.

I have put a heavy duty fan clutch in, but the temps didn't move much. I know i have good coolant flow.

I'm guessing i still have some timing issues causing the temps (and maybe from initial breakin?).

                thoughts?

You need to finish break in first before you start changes, motors will run warm breaking in and it is the middle of summer also. Are you running a fan shroud, super duty fan clutch, factory heavy duty metal fan, is the radiator clean inside and out, correct thermostat in? All these need to be checked and verified.

Thanks Wiley ?- yes to all of those questions. New 195 thermostat, original fan shroud, new heavy duty fan clutch, clean radiator, original 6 blade fan.

I probably have about an hour of run time on it and driven around 10 miles. I think I just need to drive it for a while and keep an eye on the temp.

I?m running joe gibs break-in motor oil. My original plan was to change the filter around 100 miles and do an oil change around 500.

Delta - wondering where you wound up timing wise? Going to be running almost the same setup and curious.

                          jonsonic..

getting better. i'm getting close to 200 miles. haven't been able to drive it much - life and kids keep getting in the way. BUT, it is better, haven't checked timing etc.. in a while. It is running a little cooler (not much). 100 mile filter change was interesting - very obvious parts were/are still "mating" oil draining out of the filter had a nice metallic sheen.

as of now, the engine has settled down and most of the little ticks and noises have gone away.
