    Headliner restoration

I was lucky to find a two piece headliner in my local pick-and-pull. I removed the old foam backed headliner and will replace it with new.

So there was some warpage. I gave the cardboard liners a good soak with the garden hose and gathered all my heavy stuff to flatten it. I hope this works.

That heavy roll of duck tape should do the trick!

Shoulda put down a piece of plywood or at least boards down on the headliner before the weight... distribute the weight evenly.

I finished the panels at midnight last night. Easy project. I didn't use the typical headliner material because I feared it would show the many imperfections in the old cardboard material.

I am very pleased with my amateur results!

Here's a side by side. The one on the below right is the one I removed from my wag. I cannot believe I tolerated it for the past 11 years. There was no rear panel.

Lots of lightweight polyester carpet (made from recycled drinking bottles) and 3M spray adhesive.

              nice work
              looks great
good idea, using different material to hide bumps, etc.

it feels good to do a project yourself.

              still jealous over your wagoneer

the front end, the perfectly aged red exterior.....nice.

This is such a satisfying project. Came out looking good. It'll look even better in the Jeep.

*Remember to carefully cut out the little holes for the lights before install.* Would hate to have the job half done, than realize there's nowhere to install the over head lighting...

What imperfections would there be? A little warpage, or did you fear that the material wouldn't stick properly (leaving new saggy spots)? My rear board is a little warped/sagged, but its not really that noticeable to others, or even myself if I'm not looking for it. If I'm looking for it, then I can see it. It droop's a bit from where the light is on each side. Remind's me of a set of boobs when a girl is bent over!

I won't be reinstalling the overhead lights. The front chrome light assembly as well as the rear light and switch are long gone. That's why I filled and covered the holes in my "new" headliners. Instead, I will be installing LED strips along either side of the headliner. I'll post pics after they are installed.

                          Amazing!

How flat did your headliner come out? Mine is super warped, too and I figured I was relegated to buying new/$$$$$$ one but if yours came out nice and flat, maybe I'll try that, too!

The thing is, the light supports the board.

They are much flatter than before, but don't over do it. The headliners are only cardboard and they will delaminate/disintegrate. The 88 degree day and hot driveway really sped up the drying process. Without it, I suspect they could have just laid there and turned to mush.
