Please Help 1970 J4000

Hey folks,
I recently got a 1970 J4000 gladiator pick up.
I am building a swamp buggy out of it.
It has a 232 I6, 3 speed tranny, dana 20 t case, dana 44 front end and dana 60 rear.

When I bught the truck it did not have a starter in it and I for the life of me can not find one. 1970 J4000 does not come up at auto parts stores. It comes up as the 3800, 4300, 4500 etc etc.
I did choose the 3.8 I6 starter that was listed at the auto parts stor but the starter does not fit.

The engine block has an E on it.

If anyone has a 232 I6 from around this time could you please give me a part number off your starter.

Or if anyone has any info can you please help.

I plan on ordering a starter for a 1970 amc hornet tommorrow and will see if that fits when it comes in.

AMC changed the blocks in 1972. Prior to that the starter was on the driver's side on the 6 cylinder motors.
The starter for the 1970 AMC car should work, but I am not certain about that.

Asking for one from a J4500 would net you the right one (or at least it should).

The J4000 could be had as a J4500, 4600, 4700 or 4800. With the increasing number signifying increased carring capacity (think 1/2, HD 1/3 3/4 and 1 ton).

All (but the 4800 taht never came with a 6) will have the same starter.

If your Jeep as the D60 5 lug rear it is either a J4600 or a J4700.

Jeeps system of model identification gets parts stores all confused. Non of them have thigs listed right.

Been down this road before? Your parts exist. Just remember that the pimple faced parts dude is trained to punch numbers into a computer data base that insist that your JEEP was never built. Tell him to open a book. It's not his fault

I would go to NAPA they seem to have the best library of actual books to find hard to get parts. It always seems like I try everywhere else first for stuff like that when I should just start there. Every time Autozone or Checker couldn't help me Napa was able to get me the parts I needed.

The 232 changed mid year 1970 from the Rambler design to the unified AMC design... the 199 became the 232 and the 232 became the 258.

Try a starter from one year earlier. The starter you need should be the same as the 232 from earlier years of J-truck and AMC passenger cars. If the starter they get you is the same as the starter for a 258, it's wrong.
