    Holley Truck Avenger

Hoping this is not too much of a repeat from other threads I searched.

I have an opportunity to get a 670 Holley Truck Avenger for cheap cheap.
This carb will be going on the 401 I am currently rebuilding, it will be almost stock other then intake, headers, and carb.

My question is what is the common consensuses on these as for a far amount of street driving? We will be using the rig as we do now for road trips, camping trips, medium off road trails, and probably light towing.

My brother has one on his CJ5/350SBC/TH300. He drives his around on the street, does some offroading (some sand, some hard pack), and other than it running really rich because he has not learned to tune it yet, it seems fine.

The real question (and Ristow will know off the top of his head), is "is the truck avenger "better" than a rebuilt stock Motorcraft that came on the 401?" assuming you still have the stock Motorcraft carb. A Truck Avenger is better than no carb, that's for sure, but if you have the Motorcraft, I can't imagine the Truck Avenger is cheaper than a Motorcraft rebuild...

I think regardless, I am going to pick up the Truck Avenger because the guy selling has the rebuild kit with it for $100.

Rang, I do have the stock Motocraft and planned on using it until this deal came up.

Ristow, This is going to be more the weekend warrior then daily driver but i guess the statement stays true that it will see probably 75% street and 25% trail or offroad.

Does anyone else have experience running one of these mostly street?
might be dumb question considering the reason you would buy one

the truck avenger deleted the hi speed air bleeds and put check weights in the valve body instead. the air bleeds prevent siphoning,it'l like sucking pop up a straw with holes in the side.

the TA put check weights in place of air bleeds, and also why it has annular boostrs,it needs the extra pull to lift the weight in the valve body. thats why it can handle angles better. its also why the fuel control suffers.

i had one,and it even ran fine,on my daily driver many years ago. they do run fine. but if you really don't need to run at hi angles there is better choices.

I had the 470 TA and it was horrible for street driving. Could NOT get it dialed in right, must have swapped jets 10 times. Swapped it out for a street avenger and was able to get it set up quickly.

What were the problems on the street?

It was either too lean or too rich at cruise (I can't remember which, has been years). Was tuning with a wideband air/fuel meter and changed out jets a bunch of times.

Without changing a thing besides the carb, was able to get the street avenger set up super fast.

                  Thanks for the response.

Looks like i will just have to see how it goes, I still have the stock carb as a fall back.

Doing some more research on these, I get about 50/50 of people who had no problems with them on or off the street after a bit of tuning, or had only problems.

                  Thanks to all who responded.
