Any value to stock 401 pistons?

When I do my tear down, should I be careful when removing the stock pistons from my rods or are the stock pistons worthless? Baring any damage to the piston, are they worth selling?

Pistons are a wear item... it'd be like selling lifters or a seal

Who's gunna want to buy used pistons with "who knows" how many miles on them?

I seriously doubt it man, but as Matt has to say... Throw em on ebay and see if some dummy buy's them!

...or just throw them in the scrap pile to get a little cash out of at the scrapyard.

The only reason I ask is the Geo engine I built a couple years ago had these unique pistons in it. Used they were worth more than the new ones I put in. So when I did my rebuild, I had to carefully press the pins out so I could re-sell them. If these stock used pistons with "who knows" how many miles on them are worth less than $50 I'll tossem in the pile.

On ebay they will go with a starting bid of $25/no reserve/actual shipping (providing they are not scuffed/damaged).

They can be useful for a patch-up repair on an engine with, say, a hole in one piston. There's no reason why you can't install a used piston if the diameter matches the bore and the lands and grooves are in good condition. Broken pistons are not a common problem though.

I think it is kind of funny that you expect to replace the pistons. (small haha) That decision should be made once the engine is torn down and inspected.

You could run a cable through the wrist pin holes and make a dandy mirror ornament.

At work I keep my change in a piston that I had in one of my VW engines. I sucked a valve, broke the head off it, and jammed the head of the valve back into the exhaust port sideways. Some cool markings on the top of the piston.
