the dual exhaust on my j20 has one hanger for each pipe, back behind the muffler. the hookers don't mind a bit. 25K+ miles that way.
My hedmans have been running with the same exhaust pipes behind them since 1999. I just recently replaced the plugged up, rotted out Walker Turbo mufflers with new Walker/Thrush Turbos. I have a dual short-pipes though. The only hangers on my J20 chassis are in front of the mufflers and are bolted to the big, arching boxed crossmember with rubber and steel straps. The mufflers are behind this and there is no tailpipe out of the mufflers. Haven't been any "tail-pipes" of any length (aside from some 18" turndowns for several years) since I shortened the full-length exhaust-shop-installed system in 1999.
The hedmans are about 20-years old and no cracks yet...plenty of rust though.
Banshee....Thanks for this post. I have a couple sets of vintage Edelbrock shorties that I never have gotten around to installing. When I do install them I'll make sure I pay attention to how the rest of the exhaust system is supported. I do like the idea of a flex joint though. I'll have to think about it.
Mike - check the difference between your TH400 bellhousings and shifter locations between your 72 and 77 360 rigs. The 72s used a Buick NailHead bellhousing TH400 and an adapter plate between the block and tranny bell. In 1975ish that changed as AMC got their own TH400 bell-housing bolt-pattern exclusively for AMC blocks. That may be the reason.
But I'm guessing. You would be able to find the reason easier than I would since you have the rigs in your possession to physically compare.
Anyone ever buy these new type of headers and what year y pipe would be needed. Or would a custom y pipe job be in order?
They were designed to use with 74-79 J series Jeeps Y-pipe. Wagoneer, Cherokee, J10, J20.

I don't see a adapter between the block and Trans.

Hmmm pictures would help. I know they didn't have the exclusive AMC bellhousings in 1972 TH400s...but that doesn't mean someone hasn't updated yours to later 1970s gear.

Ok, good info. Now, if one was to take that y pipe and those headers from a pre 79 and install them on a late model wag(88) would there be more headaches than just having one made?
