how to tell the difference between a d18 and a d20

ive got a jeep th400 mated to a dana(?) im not sure exactly what it is, its gear driven looks to be twin stickable

here are the part numbers i found on it.

    on the tag is 300596 - 75
    994537

on the body of the case is c18-15-24with a sideways 5

on the rear output shaft is c18-19-44

and on a weired little tag that looks to be bolted onto the body but also looks like it is cast on the body is 2x29

any help would be appreciated, i will try and get pix tomorow

    try this: http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/db.shtml
or the Novak links--they deal with the stamped case numbers you have and the physical diffs:

AFAIK The D20 has a center rear output (behind the input) and the D18 has the rear output on the passenger side (behind the front output). Also I don't think the D18 ever came in a FSJ.

yup its a dana 20, so now my other question would be, is it possible to take the strength in gears and guts of a d300 and swap them into the d20 so that i can mate it up to my th400?

no,the d300 case is dimensionally different. even if you could fit the gears into the d20 hosuing, youd need to find a d20-style "bull gear" that would be compatible with the other inner gears. this gear does not exist that will fit the th400 factory d20 tailsahft(15 internal splines)

the spicer 18 wont fit for the same reason(unless you rebuild it with the d20 gears) and you even have to be careful mix-n-matching d20s,as there are 2 different pitches of the cut on the angle cut teeth.

thanks scotty, looks like for ease of use ill be looking for a 727 tranny...or find a part time kit for the qt(though id much rather have the gear driven case) and bolt my 300 to my baby xj.
