    Zinc substitute!

    Hello!
I was perusing the forums and remember coming across some discussions about zinc for flat-tappet cams. Hyper Lube makes a zinc substitute that is supposed to do the same job as zinc. Costs about 14 bux a bottle and hasn't seemed to cause any harm so far...

    Found it at O'reilley's.

For $14 + oil I'll stick to the high zinc Amsoil (AMO1G-EA) I've been running.

There are a few flat tappet friendly oils that end up being cheaper than buying regular oil plus additive. Valvoline VR-1 oil has a good zinc content, theres brad penn racing oil and joe gibbs hotrod oil.....have to find a local distributor for those though.

It is good to know that zinc additive can be found though.

Just figured I'd let y'all know. I'm not sure what oils have what kind of zinc content so I figured the additive was a sure thing. Aside from the few oils listed here (wish I knew where to find Amsoil around here) what others are good?

And just to refresh my memory, what exactly is a flat tappet design? Is it where a flat bottomed hydraulic lifter rides directly on the cam?

No shot at your find, for sure. Always good to know we have options. The Bulltear oil is designed to run in our engines as well and has had lots of good feedback.

As far as Amsoil just sign up to be a preferred customer...think it's $20/year? All the oil you can want is just an order form away. lol

Yes, a flat tappet cam is when there are no moving parts between the cam lobes and the lifters (ie: no rollers, etc.). I don't know of any modern engines that are still flat tappet...everything is either roller or overhead cam. Though my experience with modern stuff is rather limited.

STP sells an additive (with ZDDP) WAY WAY cheaper than $14 it's in a blue bottle.
Available @ just about any parts store....

I'd also agree that it's better/cheaper to just use a quality oil in the first place.

I believe rotella has changed their oil lately too...check the bottle next time to be sure.

Be careful with the STP, I've heard it take 2 bottles to equal the Amsoil or GM EOS.

Where is everyone buying the Amsoil ZDDP?

Careful in what way? This isn't engine break-in...

I don't use any additives, just good quality oil, haven't had any issues with older engines.

They are using Amsoil oil. Amsoil doesn't sell a ZDDP additive.
