Serious problem, anyone had this happen before?

Its been a while since I've been around here. I'm surprised to see IFSJA is still up and running, I'll try to drop in more.

Anyways, I got up this morning and went out to my jeep to drive to class and the first thing I find is my driver's wing window open, driver's window rolled down, door unlocked and open slightly. Some low-life broke the latch off of my wing window, unlocked the door and made off with a bunch of my stuff. Among the things that were taken were the whole center console that was resting on the bench, my most recent proof of registration, my hunter's license and validations, a lock box from the back filled with tools, my great grandpa's old tool box filled with a bunch of old tools including tools he made himself, and my harbor freight winch that I had mounted on a receiver plate. I'm getting kind of annoyed at people taking stuff that isn't theirs. I've already filed a police report and i'm meeting with my landlord for the apartment complex this afternoon. I know they've got some security cameras up so hopefully we can catch them. In the meantime i have to start searching for a replacement wing window as I now have no way of securely locking my jeep. so has anyone else had this happen before? Are there any ways to avoid it in the future? Thanks!

Other than not keeping anything of value in the rig when you are not in it, an alarm system that would wake the dead a hundred miles away. You can't keep it up for long, but night watch with a .357 as a deterent works well in some parts of the country.

You can always say it was a gang drive by when the cops do show up.........

That is a very very common thing to do with vehicles that have vent windows. In fact on our fleet of older work vans that was a trick we would do ourselves to leave the truck running while locking the doors.

Just get a locking storage solution that bolts to the metal dash/floor/rear cab and call it a day. Pretend like any vehicle that has a vent window is a topless baby jeep. In fact search out products for those baby jeeps and they will work perfect for you.

After that you can just leave the door unlocked so they won't break anything. If you are woried about them stealing the whole FSJ then install an ignition interrupter switch that cuts the voltage off to the ignition. Lable the switch something random or stick it in a hard to see spot and no one will know.

I like your thinking with the .357. I'm only 19 so I'm not old enough to buy a handgun yet, but I sure do like shotguns. I may look in to an alarm system, considering it wouldn't dent my college budget too much.

Like others stated, a bolted down lock box that they sell for a baby jeep is what I got. It doesn't do much for the aftermarket stereo though. Last time someone broke into my jeep I was turkey hunting and heard my door open from across the ridge. I had a mature gobbler coming in and was in the field when I left to catch the criminal. Had standoff with game warden snoopin in my GW. They have no search and seizure restrictions, so he was within his right. After the pointing of firearms at each other, he actually put me on different birds. Didn't get bird I scared off till next season. Its actually faster to slim jim the door button than screwin up the vent window. Hope you catch the crooks on film. Good luck

This is what the wing window looks like now. I don't believe it is repairable, but I wouldn't know for sure, the whole latch was broken off of the frame

                    OK - ouch

In my opinion you have two evils to choose from, you can find someone to sawsall off a shaft and have one tac welded on..........................................

OR, remove all the innards of the door, regulator, door lock mech, and remove all the main windoe regulator channel screws so you can dislocate the big window so it sits aside....

then remove the screws along the door frame holding the triangle frame and work it out thru the top - you will trash the upper wipes - so order new ones...

if you go this route i suggest - suggest - - you may want to concider new wipe sets and vent window and felt channel felt seals from BJ's or TGW....it GONNA COST YA...

Once you see how much of a PITA it is to remove the wing frame and window - dont be suprised if a seller asks for a hundred + shipped

i just did mine recently - so feel free to ask questions...

I was just talking to SCNEBFSJ who is parting a jeep right now and said $40 for the wing window assembly. I didn't realize it would be that much work though. Now I want to find those thieves and ring their necks at the very least . If I could find out how to actually remove the glass for the window from the frame, I could probably fix what I've got now. I took a closer look at the shaft and all that happened to it was one of the edges broke off at the end of the shaft. If I could get a spacer or something in there and epoxy or JB weld it in place, it could work. I was able to get the latch back into the frame, but it was too loose because one of the edges was broken. Do you think that could work?
