Nice weekend for a light engine rebuild??

so today i decided to start a light engine rebuild on my 78 J10. finally got all the parts together for it
    -Headman Headers
    -Full Engine Gasket Set
    -Thermostat
    -Plugs
    -Comp Cam Push rods
    -Spare Rocker Set
    -Spark Plugs
    -Flex-A-Light Fan
-Original 2bbl Intake from my 71 Javelin (pre emissions)
    -100 amp Alt
    -Ect.

Here is what im starting with, original 360 2bbl with 93K miles

so every thing starts off good and getting things off fairly easliy. althogh stupid clutch fan cut my hands all up trying to get off.
get the intake manifold and rocker covers off and find this. . .

Looks like the Previous owner never changed the oil
okay, whatever so a little more deep cleaning is gonna be needed. . .

i start on the rockers, getting them out and i find out one had a bad crack and ended up snapping when i loosened the bolt

now i move on to the exhaust manifold start getting the bolts out and notice 3 in the back already had rounded heads . now i have ended up rounding 2 more bolt heads and snapped another in the head

so to calm my self down i decided to start cleaning and repainting some engine parts. got original amc metallic blue

anyone know a good way to get the 5 rounded bolts out? im working out of my apt. parking lot so options are a little limited

the last 3 or 4 manifolds I had to take off all had bolts that were rounded.. I used a 12mm deep socket and lightly taped them on to the bolt. worked great. the taping of the socket onto the bolt also makes the bolt eazer to get out..Breakes up the rust.
you have to pound the bolt out of the scoket after you take it out of the head.
just make sure when you turn the bolt they do not break off in the head.
JEEP Why did they make so many??? I just don't have the time to buy them all...LOL

I have had success with craftsman bolt outs. The only problem I've had is twisting the head off.

grind the heads off, slide the manifold off and pull the studs out with a vice grip.

              day 3

well, got the exhaust manifold bolts cut with a sawzaw .
got a friend who goes to ATI for automotive removing the leftover studs for me.

after i got the heads off i went through a lot of sea foam, carb cleaner, and brake cleaner to get it all cleaned up. man was it full of sludge!

and to end the wonderful day i started to get the block repainted!

                  engine heads

so talking with my friend at ATI. 3 of the head bolts came out with a little persuasion. the other 3 had to get completely drilled out and hela coils placed in. hopefully the heads come back tomorrow and i can get the rest of this engine together.
