    4.0 swap in a 1979 Chief

last week I started the swap to a 4.0 out of a 1998 Grand Cherokee.

    Brake booster is a YJ

    Axles are Nissan Patrol

engine is offset 1,25" to allow clearance for brake booster

    Some pictures:

    twinsticked D300 to be installed

space between intake and brake booster

    clearance between pumpkin and engine

tack welded engine mount, will be fully TIG welded

engine at full bump and 35" BFG MT tires

might have to lower the car a little bit, or install 37"

tomorrow will be test fitting the front clip and hood to see if all the additional stuff will fit (radiator/ battery and stuff)

hopefully the build will be starting to get going a little bit

Interesting. The 4.0L is a great engine - you should be very happy with the result.

I thought I misread the "Nissan Patrol" axles, then I noticed your location. Here in the USA, Patrols are really rare, having been imported for only a couple of years, and in low numbers, in the late '60s. Apparently they are not so rare over there.

Easily available, 4.88 ratio, air locker big disc brakes and almost as strong as a ford 9 inch looked like a winner.

Not sure on the 42re but if it wont hold i'll get an aw4

Last weekend I/We dis some testfitting of the panels to check for clearances and stuff. also put the front springs in te check ride height.

Looks like I won't be needing a BL or a Hydroboost, altough the latter might be necessary depending on how she'll brake with the YJ MC.

anywaay, here are the pictures :-)

at rideheight on 35" 4" bump at the moment, might increase to 6 or just add the 37's

front spring, it's a shorty but I'm not looking for flex (hence the radius arms) but for zombie smashing comfort

clearance between engine and radiator, might do electric fan, not sure yet

            drivers side clearances

            passenger side clearance

            placed the PCM

            plans for coming weeks:

            - take out the front end and fininh welding/mounting the motor mounts.
            - build a tranny mount
            - placing the 1998 GC tank in the spare tire location, might be a tight fit measured a 1/4 clearence

but first a 10 day vacation to take the family out

Very nice build! You're going to have a very unique ride in Holland. The Zombies will be very confused before you run them over.

If you get some free time, put the rest of that Patrol in a box, and ship it to me!

Looks awesome! You didnt use the crappy grand cherokee tranny did you?

I dont really understand how you got so much lift from such tiny springs?

only got the axles, same price here as the D44 with 3.54 en drums. complete patrols here go for between 1500-3500 dollar, usually with 250.000 miles tough.

austinaubinoe, I did put the crappy 42RE in, is it dies I'll look for a OBD2 AW4.

at the moment with the availability of parts and conversion parts very limited (you only find small VW's here in junkyards) it's the easier choise since it will make initial wiring and stuff easyer.

Basically I'm using 1998 GC driveline with D300 instead of NP249 and the GC wiring/gauges and the fuel system. seems like the easyest way for a OBD2 swap.

I think that the lift comes from the low frame mountning point (frame centerline height) I might move the top coil holder up a little bit, altough the height keeps growing on the wife's ease of mind so I just might be able to simply "forget" to lower it

came back from vacation today, started mounting the tank. would like to have about 20 gallons of gas and 25 gallons of LPG.

fit the grand cherokee tank in the back. still contemplating on doing a bodylift just to be able to get the tank in higher, at the moment the tank is 21 inches from the floor on ride hight.

Also gonna redesign the front frame side coil buckets. I want them higher to drop the ride height and adjustable to be able to fit bigger tires.

here some pics from the gas tank:

that's it for today, have a whole week of thinking and tinkering coming up

Here's my 84 J10 with 4.0L/AW4 on Photobucket I've been working on the past 10 years off and on (mostly off due to health issues)

See the fullsize version at: http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/y20...er_media_share

I still have a full set of factory I-6 frame horns, mounts from the motor and Energy Suspension poly mounts. GM Hydroboost is easier to do than other brand braking.
Jeep gauges are for amusement only. Any correlation between them and reality is purely coincidental.
