    Oil pan replacement

    Hi,
Is there a trick to getting the oil pan out? Is it straight forward? Mine is leaking and rusted through. Just hoping I dont have to pull the motor or something silly...

Naw, pretty easy. You might have to persuade it a bit with a rubber mallet or chunk of wood. I highly suggest jacking up the front end and supporting the frame rails so the axle hangs down for clearance. It's not a hard job but snaking the pan clear and out will be MESSY so have lots rags on hand.

Ok, thanks. You're right. Wasn't too bad. Any suggestions on getting the old gasket off the block? Its like cement...

I used a razor on mine, took a while, though.

Professional gasket scraper on the block. Since you are replacing the pan, no need to clean it. Otherwise I would take it to the wire brush in the bench grinder. Make sure the sealing surface is straight around the bolt holes if you put a used pan back.

So when installing the gasket, do I use some rtv at the corners? Is there a torque?

i spray all my gaskets with copper coat. use a little rtv at the corners. torque is light, snug them with a small ratchet. after a few hours retorque as the gaskets compress.

The Felpro box will tell you about RTV at the corners. The torque is given in the TSM.

Ok, I got the stuff from teamgrandwagoneer. There were no instructions. I think I got it figured out.

Can anyone tell me the size of the exhaust studs at the bottom of the manifolds?

Do not use a cheap Chinese pan, they do not fit.....use a good OEM or American made (Mildonon) pan. Glue the gaskets and and seals on the block and use RTV on the seals and gaskets...light on the gaskets and more in the 4 corners. The glue will hold the gaskets/seals in place as you wrestle the pan in place.

Well, that may have been good advice. I finally got it all together and it leaks from the rear. Hope I didnt botch the rear main seal. I'm tired and dirty so I'm gonna investigate tomorrow.

Problem solved. Turns out I'm an idiot and didnt tighten the rear bolts on the pan very much. The deep lip on the stamped pan didn't allow the socket to get fully on the bolt. This is why I cant have nice things...
