    Chassis modifications advise needed

    Hey guys,

Busy building a monster Gladiator and need some advice before I do something stupid.

I am thinking of modifying the arched cross member on the chassis, the one just in front of the rear axle. Can I cut it off near the ends and weld a straight section across instead of the arch?

Reason I am asking is that I have more than enough clearance between the rear driveshaft and the bottom of this cross member. If I can get it lower then I can mount the gas tank just above it.

    Any advice would be good.

Here's a pic of the chassis as it now stands:

If you don't need the clearance, whack it off. But before you do, tack weld some braces on top and the bottom. It is almost certain that the frame will want to change dimensions if you just cut it without any bracing. Weld in your new piece, remove the braces.
If at first you don't succeed, use a bigger hammer.

      That's really good advice.

Thank you. great advice, I never thought about the chassis distortion that may be caused.

Thanks, I have a motto in life "Why be normal" What you see is a JK Wrangler Long arm suspension on 40's. Can't wait to get her running.
