How to start a jeep when its flooded....

Usually it cranks right up in the morning, except for this morning. Pumped it a little too much and now I can't get it to start. I know you're supposed to put the pedal to floor and crank, but this is not working. Not even after waiting an hour. It def smelled like it was flooded this morning. Someone help me out here please. Thanks!

take off the air filter/whatever you have on there and let it air out.

when my old gladiator floods (which is always) I use a little magnet on the butterfly choke arm to hold it closed, or open, whatever it takes for it to start.

    good luck!

Thanks...took the air filter off and will wait a little longer. So I'm guessing that when I try again I prob shouldn't pump anymore gas while I"m cranking it?

Don't know if it will work or not, but try pumping like you are getting ready to run a marathon. My choke died on me and I thought the same thing (cranked good, smelled fuel, etc). I tried the "hold to the floor until it goes" plan too and it didn't work. I waited all day once and had to get towed home. Still (because I haven't fixed yet) if I try like normal, nothing. Pump fast while cranking and it will catch spark. May take 10 - 20 seconds, but you will know if it is working because the engine will start cranking faster and then should catch. Once it is warm it usually doesn't take this, but it may if it sits for a while.

          Good luck!

Thought it would be simple, forgot it was a Jeep.

Yup, put the foot to the floor and crank it over. Should clear it out.

Alright guys, still nothing. I put it the floor and crank and crank and crank. Same when I don't floor it. I also tried cranking with the choke's propped open, still nothing.

I guess my last resort would be spraying the carb with starter fluid?

Do you know if you're getting spark to the plugs? Might not be fuel related at all.

I agree... coil could have died.

In my case for some reason, I wasn't getting 12V at the coil anymore... 6V was all she had.

Nother possibility is the ig. module. When mine quit, I did just what you're describing. You can pull it and take it to NAPA, etc. to be tested.

Good news guys. It has been confirmed that I'm an idiot!

The jeep was out of gas!! Makes a good arguement to fix the gauge this weekend. It was parked on a hill, so I must have been reaaaallly out of gas.

Thanks for all your help guys.

You could still floor it because it's just fun?

I think most of us have been there. Whats really bad is when you call your wife to bring you some gas and have to tell her your gas gauge is not working, when in truth I just had the I can go a few more miles bug....
