How long since it's had a good tune up. Carb adjustment and timing. Change the fuel filter. Is it sluggish? Maybe a clogged up catalytic converter if you have one.

As JJ said, tune up. But also, check the power valve on the carb. If its bad, it will literally poor fuel into the engine. And thats the most common reason.

Also, check your oil, smell it for fuel. If the fuel pump has an internal leak, it will leak into the engine and end up in the oil pan.

just had the engine pulled and major work done to it
had the mechanic take all extras off while it was out
air conditioning and all emissions stuff so assume had to make adjustments to make sure it would run right? timing etc?

hasnt been running well since i brought it home mechanic said the choke was sticking?
on starting it up i was getting black smoke from exhaust would have to run it about 15 minutes before it would run well.
until i ran it that long it would act like it was starved for air
was a lot worse the last few days clouds of black smoke so looked under hood today

found the little metal tube that connects to the choke with warm air hadnt been attached to the choke so believe that is why it was not opening til i ran it for 20 minutes or so?
once it was warm it ran fine

mechanic said i should change spark plugs and will do so

could this have been the problem? choke not opening etc ?

I know a choke not working properly will really jack up your mileage. Maybe you found the problem. I know my wife got better mileage in her 83 when I took the converter out and put a straight through muffler on it.

drove jeep just now to get gas, what a difference, the choke is hooked up to the little metal pipe so is getting warm air opening perfectly drove beautifully

glad to hear that having the choke working properly will help with gas mileage

will change out plugs as well

              thanks for the suggestions guys

Black smoke is a sure indicator of too much fuel. A choke that is stuck closed will cause that. May be worth checking the idle mixture screws as well. Screw them in (do not tighten them though), and then back out two turns as a starting point if the choke doesn't fully fix it.
